From my experience it isn’t the car they’re after, usually they’re looking for any dumb thing inside that can help them with their fix.
Or the catalytic converter.
Probably true, I have an Audi so I guess this doesn’t meet the Honda/Toyota prerequisite those guys go for.

Someone broke into my car that had nothing inside other than around 30¢ of change. You see, I don’t use cash/change often but had just used up what quarters I had for parking the day before.
My grandma always had some candy in her purse for the heroin addicts on her block.

This is the part about harm reduction that I wish more people understood. Either you do it the right way - set up a clinic - or pay for it later in terms of security systems/service, insurance rates, theft, property damage, and the occasional violent encounter (e.g. during theft). This guy did the math and realized that a $20 bill is WAY cheaper than the alternative(s).

Sad how low our society has sunk. Don’t put drug addicts into confined rehabs. Better to enable their addiction which results in crime.
I think so. Let them get high. The’ll either go to rehab by themselfs or die of overdose, which is their choice as an adult
That’s a callous way to treat people who are vulnerable and wrestling with addiction. They need help and support, not abandonment.

When you justify illegal acts with “vulnerable” and “Victim” you are enforcing the idea of permissiveness. If stealing and vetting high are ok “because they are victims” than murdering is too? No dude. We are adults. I know people living in their cars right now that don’t use drugs nor steal.
We are nott going to fix this problem with pitty. Tbf the only way to really fix it, for future generations, is by providing access to food and education to everyone.
Recognizing when people need help and support doesn’t mean you are trying to justify illegal acts. No one said stealing is ok. Just because you understand the root of the problem doesn’t mean you are giving it a pass. This is why people with mental disorders still face consequences for their actions. However, if rehabilitation is something you value, then it is important to recognize that their needs may be different than other people’s for rehabilitation to be successful. Punishment with no attempt at helping a person overcome their afflictions is just a guarantee that they will act out again.
If you let them get high they will steal. They have to so they can buy drugs and get high. There will be victims. You might be one of them
i know at least three meth addicts right now. two told me they used because they can’t/couldn’t access their mental health medication. one told me that many people don’t start until they are already on the street, and the misery plus being forced by cops to move over and over instead of sleeping encourages use. one told me it was the only way they could stay awake to work enough to support their family.
addicts need real help, like medical/mental health care, housing, a living wage.
but yeah, desperate people will do desperate things.
I can understand how you can be in such a horrible financial situation that you are forced to live in your car or worse on the street. If that was me I would surely be looking for booze or drugs to escape my horrible reality. With all the taxes we pay, people in that situation should be housed in a nice shelter ( we are paying enough for it) and given a job. The goal is to support them till they have enough money to afford their own apartment. If they were on this road to recovery they would have no valid excuse to do drugs
