Schleswig-Holstein, one of Germany’s 16 states, on Wednesday confirmed plans to move tens of thousands of systems from Microsoft Windows to Linux. The announcement follows previously established plans to migrate the state government off Microsoft Office in favor of open source LibreOffice.

This is great news and i hope they manage to sustain it. The switch to LibreOffice will give many companies more flexibility that previously had to, or thought to have to use MS Office because of exchanging files in .doc, .xls, .ppt and other proprietary formats.

Now the government agencies can demand ODF files like .odt, .ods and .odp. MS Office can work with these formats, but then the companies and individuals working with the government might consider switching to an open source suite. If this makes rounds, other government agencies feel more inclined to do the switch too. This in return creates a direct interest of the government to invest in OpenSource projects for their own toolboxes, which then benefits everyone else too.

This is a huge step, which will develop a long term shift if it is let to be successful.

Not the first time I‘m reading a headline like this. Soon Microsoft lobbyists will show up with briefcases of money so I‘ll hold my cheers.
