I have an app called Petals which tracks weed usage and it includes a hit timer feature which claims that holding for more than 10 seconds will not increase the high but will increase negative health effects. Studies cited.

Oxygen plays a role in your perception. That’s what’s happening in that scenario.

      Also butane.

I’ll try to find the study later but something like 90% of the THC is absorbed within 1-2 seconds

Please reply back when you find it!

Anecdotally, once when I was strapped for cash, I had the idea to exhale into my volcano bag and reinhale it again, repeating this process several times per bag, and maaaaaaan did I get lit. It’s like your own personal hot box. I do this all the time now and radically reduced the amount of herb I was going through, while also massively improving the high.

I struggle to reconcile my experience with your assertion, but am eager to learn more if you have the data.

            Interesting link, thanks for sharing.

In this experiment, increasing puff volume significantly raised THC levels in the blood and behavioral effects, while longer breath-holding slightly increased THC levels but did not enhance behavioral effects.

From the article. They do mention a slight increase, fwiw. I’d be curious if the same is true for vaping and to what extent if so. Cool stuff!

Yeah, but a normal, instinctual breathe-in breathe-out, motion doesn’t hold the smoke in your lungs for 1-2s. Usually you’d breathe in til your lungs are full, then immediately breathe out (if that, some might not even inflate their lungs). Pausing and holding for a second does seem to make a difference, anecdotally at least.

That being said, when you feel higher because you’ve held the smoke in for longer (like zeroing) that’s usually just oxygen deprivation and is the same high you can get holding your breath at any time, just mixed with a little weed high.

Yeah I usually will hold for a second or so, just a pause before exhaling. I do think that’s more effective than just a straight-up in-out hit, but I don’t think you’d see a significant difference between say 1 second and 10 or 20 seconds.
