Magic 8-ball says: enshittification is in your future
Is this the guy that wanted people to pay for reloading ingame? Society really is built to make idiots rich.
I was like “how could discord be any worse?” Then this drops xD
I just don’t take anything serious… I refuses to pay for anything and always a inch from burning it all down. Social media just is not for me but I love harvesting knowledge.
Anyone looking for an alternative, Revolt is FOSS and pretty much on par with Discord in 2015. They have voice chat and video chat is in development on their roadmap. You can even self-host your own server.
I never got the appeal of discord, but that’s fine.
The use of it as a support for a project? So bad.
Hopefully it will collapse and go away.
I’ve coped long enough, that’s the final straw for me.
I’m cancelling my $3/month subscription and putting $1 to my instance, $1 to Wikipedia, and $1 to the Internet Archive. Not a lot but it’s better than discord.
RIP discord.
Back to self-hosted teamspeak then I guess
user entered your channel
o7 rip Discord, you wont be missed.
I mean I’ll miss it. Current FOSS options are not up to par
Revolt is pretty good! Most of the features you want from discord are already there. It’s FOSS and servers can be self-hosted.
Revolt has been super dead every time I use it. I can’t get a feel for it because any communities I find with any chatter usually go silent within a month
The public servers that are just operating on discovery - sure. I have a private Discord with friends I’ll be looking to transfer, as well as a community with external intake sources.
I mean it’s also not federated. That’s got to hurt
Maybe for this crowd. Almost no services I use aside from email were federated, before I went to Lemmy and Mastodon. And now it’s email, Lemmy, and Mastodon. Average users just chasing a good experience don’t really care about federation, despite its benefits.
They care if the platform is a graveyard, which Federation helps with. that’s my point. Not that most people sit down and literally go “man I just want Federated services.”
element isn’t bad tbh. I’ve been using it lately, and it’s actually caught up a lot.
What’s element?
basically foss e2e encrypted discord. https://element.io/
Dope this looks great
It’s also federated, so anyone can run a server and any of your users can join any other servers. I’ve been slowly migrating my discord server over to it
Why do they need my location data?
So it’s instance driven as well then. I’m not quite techie Enough to run my own instance but hopefully I can find a good one for us to jump on. Thanks for the tip. I tried revolt but it just wasn’t quite it and every server I’ve gone to has been a graveyard.
Discord is never going to be profitable lmao
It can be a loss leader for microsoft, but at the end of the day, discord will always lose money. The operational cost of discord is way too high
This change just means more enshittification like with every ceo change.
Honestly they should just go full on points shops for spending money on xbox, like steam. Give out points to use for customization. That way they could at least make some incentive to use xbox and probably boost sales.
Does Microsoft own Discord?
Was anyone else having trouble making a revolt account yesterday? I kept getting an error, I assume their servers are experiencing an influx of new users
I’m already working on a tool to replace discord for my gaming group. Planning on rolling out a stack of open source IM and Voice/Video chat with ActivityPub for text chat rooms.
Integrating them all into one app is where I’ll have trouble, especially since when replacing big corpo tools they need to work perfectly the first time or nobody willvdver want to use it.
Can you provide a list of your stack? Doing the same has crossed my mind but I haven’t done much research yet
I’m still early in the research phases but so far the plan is a combined client for Galene and Mastadon. The current plan is to rip apart the apps as they exist and pull out the chunks useful for my needs, then build a basic webapp to interface with them that I can share with my friends.
Ideally I’d like to eventually roll out a docker image of the server stack as well so anyone can host it with just a couple clicks.
That’s a big project, I respect your ambition
“Well I’ve been rolling down this well-worn road…”
Quit discord last year. Moved my core friend group onto Signal. Video streaming sucks but it addresses most of my other concerns.
Potential alternatives and their issues:
-
Guilded: owned by Roblox, faces same data/privacy concerns
-
Discourse: backed by venture capital, same as above
-
Revolt: slow development, no game streaming, otherwise decent
-
Matrix: high technical barrier of entry, but promising.
If you’re looking to kick discord as well:
-
For game streaming, try Parsec (with their echo cancellation trick)
-
For movie/video streaming, try Hyperbeam.

Problem is people are fucking lazy and will not move to another platform. I want teamspeak and vent back but people nowadays won’t even try. So we are forced to keep using it. People have no balls to stand up to corpos just to learn something new. It’s infuriating.
Uh… You stand up to corpos. Just leave. Nobody is forcing you to use it.
That’s well and good for us, but then we are just the isolated few who do it compared to all our friends that stay with discord because they’re comfortable on it.
Gotta take a stand. There have been a few things where I gotta tell friends that I can’t do this. If they won’t change… Meh. Gotta have principles.

You can use matrix and still keep in touch with the lazy people. Having a place for people to go when they eventually get fed up will help a ton.
That is sweet
I’m not lazy. i have matrix up and ready to go. the issue is I can’t just force 200+ people to just up and abandon a platform where all their stuff is for one community on that platform.
in order for discord to truly die, it needs a HUGE exodus. as right now, my communities are too well integrated.
basically discord needs the same mass exodus that Xitter had to bsky and the elephant one. its the only hope communities have to survive discord dying.
we’re not being lazy. we’re trying to not have whole online communities get upended when discord finally kicks the bucket. (and it will. soon.)
I want teamspeak and vent
xFire. God I miss xFire. It was better 10 years ago than any service before or since.
Iirc Yahoo frivolous-lawsuit’ed them out of existence. Q_Q
12 years ago Skype and team speak were the go to for voice chat for gaming. Once someone comes up with a less shitty platform, everyone will start to migrate again.
Problem is people are fucking lazy and will not move to another platform.
It’s not that people are lazy, it’s that a feasible alternative does not exist yet.
What is wrong with the available programs out there?
None of them come close to doing a single thing better than Discord, or even at the same level as Discord. There simply isn’t an application that realistically competes with any one of Discord’s features yet, let alone the entire suite. Every other platform currently available is either a downgrade in terms of features/functionality, or costs the user money (which immediately makes it prohibitive for 99% of users).
Found the lazy
Another issue is console integration. I’ve got friends I play with using cross-play (PC-PS5), but the only service we can both use is Discord unless they use multiple devices.
I would love to use Mumble, Matrix or Revolt but it’s the same hurdle.
I miss Ventrilo <3
