  • I always felt like cheats were rewards for beating the game. Once I had accomplished a given thing in a game on my own, I never felt bad about giving it to myself again - especially in the days before saving in games was a standard thing. So even when schoolyard chatter taught me where the warp whistles were in Mario 3, I didn’t use them to get to Boswer until I had got that far myself.

  • This is the new stable base of Fedora. The distros you mentioned are forks of Fedora.

In a practical sense, this means most of the big changes will eventually make their way to the forks, though when and how these changes are incorporated depends on several things, including but certainly not limited to who is on what development teams, what these changes actually entail and if they are still in alignment with the specific downstream distro’s aims, and many other things I am too ignorant to know of myself.

The beauty of Linux is that you can check it out for yourself with minimal fuss if you’re so inclined. Live USB booting is a pretty slick way to experience an OS without committing to it entirely, and I can’t name a distro that is going to give you a hard time with any sort of dual boot.

  • “Those who make peaceful protest impossible make violent revolution inevitable.”

I can assure you the actual liberals in America don’t want violence either. Don’t look now, though, because the violence is already happening regardless of what the liberals want. Looks like the kids in France saw that they were headed for an American situation and decided they would make sure the powers that be know they won’t stand for it. They also looted supermarkets to feed the homeless in the process.

When you are sold on an idea and words that quickly turn out to be little more than bait to sucker you in, how long are you willing to take the words of comfort while things around you actively get worse? Everyone has a breaking point. The French happen to be on a hair trigger all the time, sure, but I don’t think these kids are wrong for demanding what they were promised.

The vocal support may be going to Le Pen, but clearly there’s a significant plurality who actively won’t stand for that authoritarian bullshit. Only time will tell where France lands.

  • There is, unfortunately, no way to know how one would react in a situation until one is put in that situation.

I can imagine, based on what I know of myself, that I’d have gone one of two ways. Either I would have become infinitely more withdrawn and sullen to the point of taking my own life because of the overall repressive situation you very briefly describe, or I would have become an angry, hypersexualized version of myself who would probably have ended up in a similarly early grave through some other, external means rather than deliberately self-inflicted.

Words on a screen, but I am still sorry this happened to you. Nobody asks for this, nobody deserves this, and there are absolutely people in this world who are happier and better off for your presence and who you are, entirely independent of those horrible moments in your life.

Thank you for sharing your story, and I wish you greater joys in your life than all the pain you’ve yet known combined.

  • My only experience is with Lumo and it is very limited, however after telling it similar repeatedly it does finally seem to get the point.

I also asked it to behave as C3PO without the use of any honorifics, and to keep answers concise. It will still sometimes infodump, but the false emotive bullshit and pretending to be anything more than a useful information aggregator and recompiler has effectively stopped.

Soon as i figure out how to get it to stop trying to lay out data tables for me with every answer I’ll let you know.
