Why would politicians that love war and have served in the armed forces be better?

Hey, maybe the world just can’t comprehend your greatness. Wholly unsubstantiated confidence is a great thing to have.
A demigod is (roughly) 50% man 50% god. Jesus is supposed to be 100% man and 100% god. That’s less of a demigod and more of a contradiction.
Prepare to be inquisitioned for heresy. Not for insulting Christianity, but for calling Jesus a demigod.

Flippanarchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Canada wouldn't exist without the genocide of its native population
2·6 days agoThe Muslim empire spread through Africa, Europe, and Asia at its peak and many mass killings, rapes, murders, etc did occur in the process of the imperialism and land grabs.
There’s no one Muslim empire so you’ll need to be more specific. Also there’s a pretty big difference between “normal” levels of mass killings and rapes and what European colonial powers were getting up to. Things that bad tend to get pretty famous, see: the Mongols.
Japan has a history of ethnic cleansing/genocide towards the Ryukyu and Ainu people. They also committed similar atrocities towards the Koreans in the war, and the mass rape of Koreans kept up through expansions of American bases there.
Imperial Japan was also a 19th-20th century colonial power so okay? My whole argument is that not all societies have committed crimes as terrible as those committed by 19th-20th century colonial powers.
New Zealand genocided it’s native populations the same way America and Canada did.
I mean yes those are all cases of European settler colonialism. Your point?
China has an Uyghur genocide
Yeah but the Uighur genocide is downright peanuts compared to anything you or I brought up in this conversation. Now I’m sure China has stuff that could be brought up here, but that’s not it.
I can give you similar dirt on most countries.
Then please do, because so far you’re only going for low hanging fruits that are rightly famous for their horribleness. How does this apply to places like Syria, Afghanistan or Nepal?
it remains a neocolonial force today.
Yes, which is why I said supporting Britain is problematic in the same way supporting the British Empire would’ve been problematic, just less so because modern Britain isn’t killing millions of people every year, only thousands.
It is the biggest arms supplier to Israel,
Nope, that’s America. Britain is third IIRC.

Flippanarchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Canada wouldn't exist without the genocide of its native population
1·6 days agobecause issues of a similar weight have indeed occured in everywhere.
Not quite. Few societies have anything like the Holocaust, the colonization of the Americas or British India under their belts. These things aren’t unheard of, but they’re still pretty rare historically since the political and economic logic usually made them suboptimal before capitalism. There’s also the fact that we’re not talking about only past colonialism, but also present (neo) colonialism. The difference between feeling patriotic for modern Britain and for the British Empire is a difference of degree, not kind. That said,
Feeling patriotic for any country by that logic would be incorrect.
Absolutely. Patriotism is stupid.
True but consider: People from the actual Caucasus.

2·6 days agoEh, if they were going to lie they’d have said relations between fascist A and fascist B are as good as ever. There’s no sense in putting out something like this unless it’s the truth.

politics @lemmy.world•Donald Trump yells, swears at Benjamin Netanyahu on tense call on Lebanon | The Jerusalem Post
42·6 days agoEh, not exactly. Netanyahu is the one running Israel, and he’s making plenty of unforced errors on the international PR front, but a lot of what Israel is currently hated for would’ve happened no matter who was in charge. There’s no realistic timeline where Israel doesn’t commit genocide in Gaza; the best case scenario is that the genocide ends by late 2024 rather than getting an intermission in late 2025-early 2026. The only parts of Netanyahu’s conduct that don’t reflect the views of the Israeli public and political establishment are the bad PR and ignoring the hostages; putting Gazans in their place via blood and iron is largely uncontroversial.
TL;DR: Netanyahu’s unforced errors are making Israel more hated than it’d have otherwise been, but the core reasons for international public opinion turning against it would’ve been there no matter who was in charge.

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Report: U.S. Workers Lose Over $15 Billion Every Year From Wage Theft;
3·7 days agoOh you’re right. I wonder why the title doesn’t say that. That said assuming half the work force doesn’t go through wage theft we’re looking at ~600 dollars per person. Wow that’s a lot. Also why did you just write all those zeroes?

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Report: U.S. Workers Lose Over $15 Billion Every Year From Wage Theft;
16·7 days agoDivided by 170 million workers that’s ~90 bucks per person. That’s less than I expected. Of course not all wage theft is created equal ao some people are going to be losing multiple times that.
The lib position is to ignore the credibility of the source in favor of the content on it’s own
That’s what they do with content they like. When they don’t like it they do exact as Teslekova said. How they treat with information from Al Jazeera is also a good example of this.
I don’t like putting words in historical figures’ mouths, but there’s a good chance Malcolm X would’ve been calling for the bullet if he lived today.

World News@lemmy.world•Netanyahu says military crossed Lebanon’s Litani River as Israel-Hezbollah conflict escalates
6·10 days agoUnfortunately most of the Middle East is run by US puppets, so Hezbollah/Lebanon can expect very little external aid from countries not named Iran. Syria’s current government would also (quite justifiably) rather die than give Hezbollah any support. There’s just not enough juice in Lebanon for a Ukraine. A Vietnam is absolutely possible if they tey to occupy territory though.
