• federated: Describes a system that works like email. Users join servers, which talk to other servers and allow their users to talk to each other.
• instance: One particular server. I’m using Lemmy.ml. Your instance is lemm.ee
• defederated: An action a server can take to stop talking to another server, preventing its users from interacting with the defederated server.

While it needs to improve… The entire point of federation is that there are multiple entry points.
