Just finished mazebound and loved it, short janky game but it has its charm, really fun with a friend.
Grim Dawn has me fully engaged. Some of the class combos are sooooo goooood!
Just finished playing Darkwood. Was a very unique little game.
Planning on playing Baurotrauma or Zomboid next if I can wrangle some friends
Darkwood is definitely an experience. One of the few games that’s ever managed to get under my skin. Are you hyped for the sequel?
Absolutely will be playing it haha. Interested to see how they’ll improve it. Got a slight bit completionist/grindy by the end once I “figured it out”. But sometimes that’s the nature of survival games where you feel like you gotta gather every last scrap
Yeah, I feel that. I think Darkwood really benefits from the semi-permadeath of Hard mode to keep the tension and fear up (even though I was too much of a wuss to go through with that). But even without the atmosphere was just so unsettling.
I’m on the last mission of the Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines on PSP
I’ve been mostly playing on the PSP during my commute to work and back. The game itself is fine and my first of the series actually, but it feels like a cheap spin-off (and it is) on a mobile console.
I must be on a kick for hyper action roguelike shooters rn.
I just got Sektori and it’s giving me locked-in syndrome in the best way. I can just play one run after another indefinitely. It’s so immersive and satisfying like the best Housemarque games like Resogun and Returnal.
Also playing a lot of RoboQuest. That’s another one that I can just turn on and make two hours disappear. The pacing never lets up while the huge selection of fun weapons keeps me experimenting constantly.
I’m still grinding away on Nuclear Throne too. There’s something about the game loop that feels just right to pick up a quick game. I keep getting a little further each time.
I picked back up with Cult of the Lamb. I’m playing it on extreme accessibility settings because I don’t want to hassle too much with the cult management stuff or the combat – I just want to see where the story goes.
Having just finished Ace Combat 8, I have gone back to a classic: KOTOR ll.
I discovered that my enter the gungeon save didnt survive moving to linux, so im restoring it the hard way
By playing?
Yup
I started a playthrough of Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened (2008).
Earlier this year I did play through the 2023 remake of it, and I wanted to go back and see how the (almost) original game was.
I’m now through the first chapter of the 2008-version, and so far… it’s pretty great! Admittedly I did few .ini tweaks to fix it for widescreen & 4k, it works fine (even if some characters/assets on the very edges of the viewport can blink in/out a bit). Too bad the 2008 version has fixed the “creepy Watson” teleporting, but oh well, at least I don’t get unnescessarily jumpscared.
Other than that, the graphics are quite dated, but they have certain charm. The puzzles seem fairly reasonable, if a bit pixel-hunt-y at times. The vibes are great all around though!
I got addicted to Payday 2 again…
Also not really a “patient game” since it isn’t even out yet but the Heatwarped Demo got a new update so having a blast struggling through the new hard mode they added.
Thief 2: The Metal Age. It feels like the ancestor to the Dishonored series. Arguability one of the first stealth game.
I am now completely addicted to vampire survivors
I bought a bunch of games in the recent GOG sale. So instead of playing them I’ve been playing Just Cause 3.
I honestly think this is one of my all time favourite games. It wouldn’t win any awards from critics. Wikipedia says “Just Cause 3 received “mixed or average” reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic.”. But it’s just so fun.
You can play it without need to pay much attention, just going around blowing up shit to liberate bases. A hero in an uprising against a dictator.
Anyone got recommendations for other games that are really enjoyable to play even if they aren’t award worthy games?
Just cause 3 is such a wildly awesome game, especially in comparison to JC2. Wingsuit amazing, better hook amazing, challenges amazing, also freeing the entire map is actually an attainable goal
Buying games on sale is so much more satisfying than actually playing them, isn’t it? All that potential joy at your fingertips, all those dollars you gigglingly save… Much better than actually cashing it in by playing them. I know that feeling.
I’ve never played Just Cause, but that sounds like something adjacent to Ubisoft open worlds? You could try some Assassins Creed game (I actually quite like Unity, otherwise the Black Flag remake maybe?), Ghost of Tsushima sounds similar, Sleeping Dogs perhaps (although more of a GTA-like)? Otherwise there are several Far Cry games that maybe can give you that loop of clearing out outposts?
I’ve played a lot of Assassin’s Creed, I do enjoy that Ubisoft cut and paste from time to time. I also enjoyed Sleeping Dogs. And Ghosts of Tsushima is on my wish list! You know me well 😆
I never really liked the Far Cry games I tried but magbe it’s time to give it another go.
Just Cause 3 is fun because it lets you mess around. The mechanic of clearing bases isn’t really the drawcard, it’s how you have a wingsuit and a grappling gun and just fly around blowing shit up. Then helicopters come to try to stop you and you can grapple to them and pull the pilot out and take over. Or reprogram the SAMs to shoot at them instead of you. You can grapple an explosive barrel to a fuel tank and pull them together. It’s just a fun world to mess around in, and the base clearing gives you something to aim for. It also fits into the storyline, which isn’t a bad story really.
Well, let me think. Apart from the Far Crys there is also the Saint’s Row games and maybe… Ghost Recon: Wildlands?
Oh yes I enjoyed the Saints Rows for the most part.
I don’t think I have played any Ghost Recons. I’ll put that one on my wishlist, thanks!
Also maybe Teardown?
Oh that looks interesting with good reviews, I’ve wishlited, thanks!
I’ve been meaning to try that game. Your review sold it for me. I’ll strongly consider checking it out soon.
I have no idea how much is nostalgia but it’s recent enough to have normal controls, graphics are decent, and gameplay is fun, especially after you do a few missions to unlock the core gear.
I’ve been mostly playing Morrowind recently but I sometimes want a game where I can just shut off my brain for a while.
Replaying Hypnospace Outlaw after being inspired by reading One Terabyte of Kilobyte Age, a long-running blog that studies the GeoCities archive. It’s currently down, so here’s an archive of it.
Hyperspace Outlaw looks interesting. I’m not sure it’s the kind of game I’m looking for right now but my ears are always perking up at an Overwhelmingly Positive indie game. Might check it out at some point.
I found it as one of the recommended game tiles at the bottom of another game’s store page and was baffled at the pictures. The game markets itself on its quirky designs, but shines with its compelling character writing and heartful story. It’s a unique story format since you learn about the characters through how they build their web pages and interact with each other. The story is the kind that occupies your mind for a long while after you’ve completed the game.
