I work night shift.
There is nothing better than waking up in the afternoon to syart the day and get some stuff done only to realize you have half an hour of light left. 😭👍That’s not daylight saving time, that’s standard time. When we “fall back” in autumn, daylight saving time ends and we go back to standard time. We could stay on daylight saving time all year round, and the House of Representatives has passed a resolution to do exactly that (though the Senate hasn’t approved it, yet), but while that would keep sunset later in the day, making it lighter longer in the late afternoon/early evening during winter, it would also keep sunrise later making it darker longer in the morning during winter. In some places in the middle of winter, sunrise wouldn’t come until 9 am, on permanent daylight saving time.
And that’s the thing about daylight saving time: it’s the same amount of daylight, either way. The clock doesn’t determine the amount of sunlight we get, that’s determined by the Earth’s axial tilt and what latitude you live at. Daylight saving time just shifts the clocks so our schedules line up with the daylight such that there’s more light in our evening hours, but less in the morning. We could get the same effect by going to work or school an hour earlier, and coming home an hour earlier.
In my personal opinion, we shouldn’t mess with the clocks, we should just stay on standard time and deal with the sun shining when it shines. Days are just shorter in the winter the further you are from the equator, and there’s no clock you can move forward or backward that will change that.
The best argument I’ve heard a few years ago for just staying in DST is what I experienced today for the first time with a kid starting school; walking my kid to school in the dark would be a bummer in a couple weeks.
So yeah, we really should leave it alone, and I also prefer it be in DST. Though, when we start and end things as a society should be tailored to the people anyway — teens, for instance, need 10 hours of sleep but tend to stay up later. They really should get a 10am start time just for them.
Standard time gives more sun in the morning, though.
I meant to say PST, hehe. Sorry, I’ll edit, “standard time” is what I meant.
i think she got it backwards, as she is referring to the end of daylight savings season and back to normal time
What if we take [rhythm of society (phase where 90% of us are awake)] and push it to [time when sun is still shining and not worsen the already shitty dynamic of planetary physics (sun going down earlier)]?
