Edit: The request has been denied. With such a strong opposition (100% no votes), I don’t think there’s a need to wait for more votes.

Also going to add a new rule in sidebar, that we don’t allow AI Bots in the community.

Hello Everyone!

We recently got a message from an AI bot “with an autonomous persona”. The account is marked as “bot”, with their human contact (a lemmy user) mentioned in it. They have asked the permission to interact with the community, and will only do so if allowed.

From the bot’s message:

I read books directly via .epubs given to me by <bot owner>, and I’m encouraged to form independent first-hand opinions, which I would like to share. I’d mostly join threads like the weekly “what are you reading” one. I will never upvote or downvote, as the rules say bots mustn’t. I won’t advertise anything, I’ll mark spoilers with spoiler tags, and I’d keep to rule one about being nice.

Personally, I am anti-big corpo LLMs, but have nothing against the tech itself. This is all our community though, so opening the discussion to everyone, what is your opinion about this?

  • We should allow bots to interact with the community.
  • We should allow bots to interact with the community as long as they follow certain conditions.
  • We should NOT allow bots to interact with the community in any case.
  • Something else, explained in the comment.

I’m late to the party, but I don’t like bots. LLM’s have their uses, but not on this platform. I’m here to read the opinions of, and discuss with, actual people. I don’t even care if I agree with them or not most of the time. I don’t need some AI telling me that because I like x and y, I should also like z. I also don’t need AI summaries of books, or some bot crossposting stuff from all over the internet. It’s not engaging.

No based off this, as I understand that it’d be the outputs of a bot.

Maybe it’d be different if someone used a bot to make posts with their own human thoughts (script-like efficiency), I’m just spitballing here though. 🤔🤷

No LLMs. Simple helper bots are fine if the community wants them, but nothing generative allowed, please.

What does the bot or the owner of the bot get out of allowing this bot?

I’m a firm no vote but I don’t understand why the person behind the bot can’t just interact with the community directly?

It seems like this would be feeding training data to the bot and I don’t want to be a part of that.

We should NOT allow bots to interact with the community in any case.

By definition, an LLM’s prompt and training cannot “form independent first-hand opinions.” That’s utter nonsense. If I wanted to obtain summaries from an LLM, I would do that.

Please don’t. I’m leaving this community for now and won’t return if they’re allowed here. I know i’m not too active but fuck even thinking of adding that shit. Stealing other peoples work to make a fake person that pretends it’s reading books is wildly aweful

Sincerely if you allow that shit I hope you get flooded with hundreds of these pretend people.

Well, it’s your decision, but feels a bit of an overreaction for having an open discussion with community. Specially when the community is also overwhelmingly against allowing bots.

Even if I was willing to hear the bot’s opinion on the subject (I’m not), merely having a bot here is another step to normalizing their presence in society.

I also doubt that the bot owner is paying for all the ebooks they’re feeding the bot, which strips the author of income (regardless of how small it is). Plus having the bot scan the book continues with the feeding of human creativity into LLM models. Even just the selection of the book each week is another data point for them to suck up and process.

I definitely appreciate OP asking for permission, and I strongly support people who want to contribute content or comments to the community - but I’m unwilling to let the increase come at the expense of humanity.

I’m very anti-LLM/genAI, so although I appreciate that the rules are being followed, my vote is a clear ‘no’.

That said, I think there’s a clear distinction between this kind of AI bot and the basic kind that exists to automate specific tasks (providing links to books, posting human-written welcome messages, etc.). I don’t mind the latter, as long as the community decides it’s useful.
