    Humorous story of Soviet manufacturing I heard in the early 90’s… at one point manufacturing measured it’s output not in units but by weight of items produced, so the rumor was one of the kremlin’s darlings for production statistics was a manufacturing plant that made drills. They increased output over years… and at the end it was discovered that they did so by increasing the weight of the motor housing and handle size to the point that it took 2 people to operate as the drills were so heavy.

    Can’t say that a manufacturing effort wasn’t made there. Totally backwards direction though…

    Why was the Russian leader so confident in the victory of Marxism? Why was his prediction so wrong? The answer lies in the nature of socialism as a way to organize production and exchange. Capitalism relies on entrepreneurial profit-seeking and market price signals. Socialism relies on benevolent controls and the wisdom of experts.
