Tl;dw, What did he think ot would be like?
Like what the mainstream media of his country told him it would be. One of the things that impressed him was how smooth the Tehran metro was.
The mainstream media in the US rarely gives any indication of what Tehran is like unless there is some kind of protest coverage. I would not be surprised that people had odd assumptions, but I doubt those assumptions are colored by the media. I def know people get very surprised when they see major African cities.
