Am I the asshole. My roommate/friend is moving across the country and we have 4 months left of our lease.
Our landlords won’t let us break our lease to move out early.
We live in a major city, and have renewed our lease 4 times. The initial times I said we could each look for roommates if something changed. That was something I felt more earlier on when I was in grad school and also just something that has changed for me on the past year or so.
I really don’t want to have a subletter, I am in my late 30’s and work a job where work comes home that’s confidential. I also have a lot of nice furniture and a cat, where I am nervous about subletting to a mainly furnished place to a stranger.
My budget is tight with a promotion probably 7 months from now, so it’s not a great time for me to move or take on extra rent either. Am I the asshole to be asking/expecting her to eat the cost of rent from her savings?
She was wishful (or delulu) initially. I was hopeful it would work out in both our favors too, before we talked to our landlords who wouldn’t let us break our lease.
She says she won’t be a jerk and leave me on the hook for her part but also wishes I would be up for a subletter. Am I the asshole?
