Don’t throw away your Kindle, Jailbreak it and take back ownership. Make your Kindle even better with KoReader and other apps. If you wanna see whats possible i recomment this Yt video. If you wanna get started here are all instructions: https://kindlemodding.org/ Don’t let it scare you it seems complicated but its just a lot of (easy) steps. So definitely possible in <2h.
is that super racist cartoon the best image to use for right to repair?
Happy to hear you out and I didn’t downvote, but I’m not sure how it’s racist. The original cartoon doesn’t seem racist (though Bugs Bunny has plenty of that in other cartoons) and I’m not sure how this frame could be taken that way otherwise.
Whoever it was, ive blocked them as either a troll or a complete dumbass. So take that for what it’s worth.
Looking at his other reply…. You’re right on both counts hahaha
“I’m not sure how this frame could be taken that way”
yes, you are:
“Bugs Bunny has plenty of [racism] in other cartoons”
it sounds like you do understand that cartoon is racist. you said it.
why associate the right to repair with a racist cartoon when there are so many not racist cartoons?
especially when bugs is such a capitalist mascot, and you’re trying to make this communist.
doesn’t make sense why you would choose that specific frame to associate with Communism (which many people associate with China) from that specific cartoon that is known for Asian racism to promote right to repair.
like, use Donatello fixing a gadget.
or Dexter.
or inspector gadgets niece whatever, or that mouse girl from that show… I think her name is gadget.
none of them have racist associations that you, yourself are aware of and yet are promoting.
Bugs isn’t imitating an Asian person in the original. He’s yelling at Elmer. “I AM A WABBIT!”
Penny and… Yeah, gadget
You seem to have skipped over actually explaining how this meme is racist… Afaik it’s just one of those exaggerated stretched frames from animation used to animate motion which is why it looks funny. The scene of the cartoon has nothing to do with race, and could just as easily be replaced with any other exaggerated cartoon frame.
If your sole complaint is the addition of the hammer & sickle, then no amount of substituting of bugs bunny with other cartoons will make a difference.
I don’t understand what the image is trying to convey anyway (though agree with the premise of Amazon-fucking).
Amazon still wants to retain a sense of ownership of their Kindle devices, despite it being the user who one who bought and owns it.
It’s a similar idea (albeit corrupt) idea to communism, where you don’t own anything, as everyone owns it. (there’s a USSR emblem in the corner, signifying the meme has an oppressive communistic feel about the subject)
What did I miss?
Yeah, I am wondering the same, I don’t have a Kindle, my gf has one though, and it is perpetually in airplane mode… Because why would we need the wifi on for this thing all the time?
Of you can just put your device in airplane mode … lmao y’all like drowning in glasses of water.
Yeah or lay it in a box and don’t use it…
Don’t need network connection on my kindle to use calibre.
I decided to give it a shot not too long ago. Its a bit of give and take. Pros and cons.
With KOreader you get more options for customizing layouts and fonts and spacing. You can also just put books in different folders which is great for organizing. Like I have a folder for my horror, fantasy, gen lit, classics. While I made sure to organjze my stuff on Caliber, theres not as many options on Kindle out the box, so I cant just look through books based on that, which is a feature I always wished they would have added. It also read more formats. Epub is seen as the universal one for books, but it also does PDF, DjVu, FB2, PDB, TXT, ZIP, CBT, CBZ, FB2, RTF, HTML, CHM, and DOC.
But also, yeah. My Kindle is usually on airplane mode anyways because wifi drains the battery, and I just pulled things over with the computer anyways. The UI while scrolling through books also looks so much nicer IMO. And as long as youre not doing hundreds of books at a time, its not that hard to set up collections. And while the Kindle doesnt have quite as many in depth options for fonts and shit, the specific file format for the specific UI for the specific devices also meant I never had issues with getting it to look nice.
So over all, if you like tinkering with stuff, its cool. But I do agree that it’s not really needed. You can still download books from other sources and then just transfer them over.
Piracy + Calibre
I was able to just install F-droid and from there get Obtainium to import my usual apps, including Librera which I prefer over KoReader. No jailbreak necessary.
However… I do eventually wanna jailbreak it and get Amazon’s presence off there entirely if I can. Thanks for the references, for when I get there.
Just letting the more non-techy people know that you can get FOSS apps like KoReader without having to go all the way, so to speak.
Have you instructions?
