As someone with 2 kids and wasn’t the biggest fans of kids all O can say is we kind of trained them to sleep in lol. With that said school is the worst part… im up by 6:45am during the week, but once they are gone i go back to bed for an hour or get some stuff done before my 9am job. Also weekends and summer they sleep till like 9am which is ok in my book!

8AM? School must start very late where you live. Classes started at 7:45 for me, so wakeup time would’ve been more like 6:30.

Where I grew up in the States, the elementary, middle schools and high schools shared a transportation department. Because of this school start times were staggered as buses would pick up highschool students and drop off at school, then make runs to pick up the elementary and middle schools, again staggering to accommodate different start times.

This meant that students at any of the schools could get dropped off anywhere from 25 minutes early to just before classes started (from 7:30-9:00am.) The end of the day was also staggered, with school getting out between 2:30-3:30.

Same for high school. I was one of the furthest-out kids so we started super early. I would later be in an AP class that required I get to school on my own by class start at 07:15. We finished at 14:30, but those of us in band kept going for a while. Then any other clubs/activities. When I did theater, I’d get to school around 7am and not leave until 11-12 hours later.

Yeah I can flex all the time I want but I still have to hit my 40hrs and fuck working in the evenings. I’d rather just get up and do it so I can get on with the rest of my life so 6am it is.

My wife and I wake up at ~6:30am to get our daughter on her bus. We are not morning people, in fact we are quite emphatically night people. Left to our own devices, we will sleep more like 1am-9am. We knew this when we had our kid, and we figured that our circadian rhythms would naturally adjust to the baby’s.

They did not. It’s been six years since I had what felt to me like a “normal” sleep schedule.

I love my daughter, she’s my reason for living, I wouldn’t trade her for anything, not by a long shot.

But nobody should fuck around with parenting, and nobody should have to be convinced to do it, let alone coerced. The very idea of someone doing this without 100% wanting to do it sounds like just about the worst kind of hell I can imagine, for both parent and offspring.

8AM? You’re not the kid, you’re getting 6AM so you can get that kid(s) dressed, fed, washed, etc.

now see the weekend is a fair point because the typical person does usually have those. The OP though is a bit niche. Granted if your childless with a dog your sleep in time will still be limited. Although you can’t take care of kids for 10 mins and then go back to sleep for two hours.

I’m on track to retire in my mid-30s due to not having the expenses that my co-workers with kids do, and I don’t have to do a damn thing before or after work I’m just sitting on a couch drinking a beer and watching anime when I get home. I’m 2 miles from work and don’t have to be there until 10 but that’s not necessarily the norm.

I got my good paying job at 24 and saved most of my money, but as a single person I spent $20k/yr total cost of living while living in a room in someone’s basement and a lot of that was just takeout and beer honestly.

I’m sorry but if you’ve been in the workforce for 10 years and are ready to retire soon you’re either doing some really bad math, are a prodigy making 7 figures since the age of 24, inherited money from someone else, or are planning to live off beer in someone’s basement for the next 50 years

I think 78k was my salary back then, the stock market has done really well the last decade. $1.5 million is the amount I plan to retire with.

In investments, if your investments earn 7%/yr which is a fair bit less than you can make off a basic index fund on average you have 4% to live on and 3% for inflation and your money lasts forever.

But the thing is, I’m consistently woken earlier by my fucking cat than I ever was by my kid when he was little.

Well, you luckily do not have to, if you dont want to.

    Thats like, your choice, man.

I’m a very late night person, and do work around the clock. Haven’t ever done 9-5 work. Having kids does not make that easy, but thats my choice, once again. Pushing 40 years I wouldnt be able to go through it again with small kids. My wife just had to get a few dogs though. Same things as with small kids…

Back up. You’re expecting six-year olds to wake up on time, shower, get dressed, make and eat breakfast, and get to school? All by themselves?

How long has it been since you met a six-year old?

That’s not at all unusual in Finland. I walked alone to daycare before I even started pre-school - granted it was at the end of the street I lived on.

My mom usually woke me up since she was already awake anyway but if she didn’t I would’ve just used an alarm. I knew how to get dressed and make myself a bowl of cereal at that age and I don’t need to pack a lunch because it gets served at the school for free.

Yeah I have to conclude that I live in a simulation after reading the Finn’s comment. Because the only explanation for them saying this is that I live in a simulation that occasionally needs to recalibrate itself to what I find believable. They are saying that most practically-toddlers in Finland are just as responsible as adults if not more so.

Old American here. My mom got us all up and made us breakfast, because she didn’t want us eating what we could make by ourselves--cereal was only for the weekends. After that, we were on our own to get dressed and get out the door. Starting in the first grade when I was still five for a couple of months, I walked to school with my older brother and sister till they went to a different school, and we all walked with kids from the neighborhood. No one walked alone.

So, while I could have gotten up, made cereal, and gotten myself to school starting in first grade, I’m glad I didn’t need to. Because my mom loved me.

Mom making breakfast ended when I started high school, but I was the last of four kids, and she was more than done with all of it by then.

If my mom hadn’t made us breakfast, my sister probably would have, she loved doing that stuff. She also had her first kid when she was 22, and then had two more.

I made my son breakfast (never cereal, always a hot breakfast) every school-day morning through 10th grade, when he said he wanted to do it himself. I didn’t mind doing it, but I’ve always been a morning person.
