An Appeals Court panel has ruled that federal agents can legally search through travelers’ cell phones without reasonable suspicion, probable cause, or a warrant when they cross an international border.
Not very good reporting.
They can take your phone and image it, but if the phone is off and encrypted, they can’t see shit.
They still can’t force you to decrypt the device. Make sure you turn it off and use a strong passphrase (not biometrics).
One more excuse to get out of travelling there!

They’ve held that border exception for a long time, 100 miles I think it was. I believe it was always meant to be actually crossing a border but in theory they’ve held it applying to anyone in the area.
As a general practice if crossing the US border, save everything before arriving to a cloud host you trust, wipe it clean, and re-download after.
It would be nice if modern phones let you image the whole disk like you would with a PC. I tire of phone maintenance every time I travel. I like to travel with minimal apps and data in case my phone gets stolen or lost. But I almost wish I could snapshot my phone and apps right after setting everything up and make images for travel and everyday driver use. I think this was possible with root back in the day, but Graphene doesn’t give you root.
… and after arriving. Have to load a minimal image. So this causes a major tax and inconvenience upon everyone. Tax after tax after tax.

I believe it’s 100 miles from any border or entry point. Entry points include international airports and water ports. In other words, damn near anywhere.
