Arthur Leo Zagat was one of the absolute workhorses of the weird menace and shudder pulps. The guy pumped out dozens of these things for Horror Stories, Terror Tales, and Dime Mystery, and “Mistress of the Beast!” is a prime cut of the nasty stuff.

Written in 1935 and it is pure swamp-soaked, lust-drunk, body-horror filth. My 2nd most favorite kind of filth!

Four dudes get their boats swept away in the fog of Tallahawn Swamp and end up stuck on a cursed hummock called Dead Hog. One of them already knows the place is bad news. Then this girl comes sliding out of the mist in wet, torn rags that barely cover anything, soft voice, dark eyes.

All good, right? Well, then she starts picking them off one by one.

She doesn’t just kill them. She changes them. One minute a man is staring at her with his pants on fire, the next he’s squealing in the mud with human eyes still begging while his body turns into a hog and something drags him down into the black muck.

The whole thing is fever and fog and the wet sound of bodies being swallowed. There’s a bargain somewhere in the dark, one of the survivors trying to trade the others for his own hide, and the girl laughing while she takes what she’s owed.

It’s short, mean, and soaked in that classic shudder-pulp mix of sex, betrayal, and slow transformation into something that squeals and dies in the slime.

No fancy cosmic horror here, just men who can’t keep their dicks in their pants getting turned into livestock and fed to the swamp!
