Sand said he supports Iowa’s law barring transgender athletes from competing in programs that align with their gender identity because of “fairness,” adding it’s the same reason he does not support removing gender identity as a protected class from Iowa’s Civil Rights code.
His support was met with silence, and one attendee shouted “coward” at Sand. Sand emphasized he wants “everyone to feel welcome in the state.”
