Forget where I heard it, but I remember reading somewhere that the prevalence of spousal abuse and sexual violence (esp among children) was tiny in “the olden days” (compared to modern times) when the vast majority of people lived in 1 or 2 room shacks and only spiked as humanity entered the industrial/Victorian era where a room for each person (plus the privacy that entails) became the norm.
The thesis was that there used to be no where to hide abhorrent behavior, so your family and/or the people you lived with learned about it and were able to stop it / call for help to stop it.
About to be busy with some family drama of my own, else would try to source thaf. May edit with that tonight if I find the time.
i’d imagine there was perhaps even more institutionalized abuse instead, like yeah sure you probably couldn’t get away with straight up beating people but there’s a lot that can be “excused” by being the “man of the house” or whatever.
Interesting but I wonder if reporting was similar/down/up (in comparison to modern times) and considered in these studies.
