  • The same thing happens with rodents. They gave lady rodents a lemon smell (citruis isn’t pleasant for them) and it caused them to have a kink for lemon smell for like 3 generations. Crazy stuff.

As for an explanation, Epigenetics is where you want to look. Its a fairly new field, few dozen years old, and it studies methylation of DNA. Methylation (addition of a methyl group to the exposed end of DNA) or demethylation (removal of a methyl group) happens in response to experiences while alive, and changes how genes are expressed. Doesn’t change the DNA itself, but because the methyl groups are chemically bonded to the DNA some of them carry through the reproductive process. This means some of those changes are passed down. The epigenome isnt passed down completely, about half-2/3 of it is reset between generations, iirc, but what is passed down can cause stuff like this “inherited memory”.

The epigenome is really neat, and as far as we know, everything with DNA has one. In humans, for just one example tjat we know of, it can impact fat storage. If a person lives through starvation conditions, the bodies of their offspring will prefer to pack on weight because they think they are being born into famine. When researchers studied descendants of major famines (starting with those born during the famine), they found that those methylation points didn’t reset for 3-4 generations. Thats insane! Thats a hundred years! Its also why as identical twins age, they can start to look more and more different, and they -can- actually be DNA matched if you have the tools to look at the epigenome, because no two adults will have the same lived experiences.

  • For me it’s gone fast because I’ve been in a depressive fog and just haven’t done anything to distinguish one day from the next, so every day feels the same, and it flies by according to my memory.

Every day is the same bad news with different subjects and objects. Every day the same bad things happen, in different places to different people. None of it stands out anymore, it’s just a constant blur of negativity in a blender turning into a fine paste of shit to coat everything in awful sameness.

  • Suddenly glad I’ve had no desire to play ps5 in ages.

I should look and see if theres better options for ps4, as well, since mine is currently in need of repair anyway…

Edit: I’m confused as to why this is getting downvoted? I don’t care about internet points, but I do care about being misunderstood. I’m glad because mine should be out of date enough to use this hack, and I should look to see if there’s a similar one for ps4 as long as it needs repair anyway?

  • Paper doesn’t degrade nearly as fast as you’d think, especially if its just damp and you aren’t putting pressure on it causing it to tear.

I used to use single sheets of newspaper to line my veg garden as weed barrier and they lasted an entire season no problem. I stopped because it’s hard to get newspaper now, and I don’t want to use colored ink pages.

  • Layers, patterns, gradients, and screen printed art, mostly.

Lots of screen printed art. I’m a big fan of mashup designs where two or more IPs are mixed, like star wars and star trek mixed and represented as chibbi cartoons, basically just someone’s fan art on a t-shirt or sweatshirt, such that you aren’t really advertising any of them as its not immediately clear what’s even on it. Also just art I like. Tons of places to get stuff like that. I also have a lot of shirts with jokes and phrases and the like.

Layers are good if you live somewhere that isnt too ridiculously hot, plain or gradient base t (or one of the more basic screen printed shirts) under a contrasting over-shirt is good. Really opens up the options because basically anything button or zip works, patterns or solid colors, and the extra fabric layer hides a lot of imperfections.

I do a lot of thrifting, especially when I travel, because the variety tends to span different styles and eras and people buy stuff online that ends up there, but it takes a while to really build up the wardrobe that way.

  • Thats not… I feel like you weren’t alive yet when that transition happened.

Because CDs are objectively better in basically every way than VHS and cassette, especially for consumers. No more tapes stuck in the player, no more rewinding, no more randomly unspooled tapes, no more twisted ribbons, no more seeking static, no more heat warping, etc. plus cds take up less space overall, and you can easily use many-disc cd changers.

The market absolutely drove that transition, not manufacturers. VHS and cassette were still supported and produced for a LONG time after cds came about, because not everyone was willing to drop a ton of money to get their collection in a new format.
