49·3 months agoI grew up in Portsmouth, England. Some my friends would come to school from the Isle of Wight on the hovercraft service. We all thought the hovercraft was pretty cool, but I only recently found out that it’s the only commercially operated hovercraft in the whole world.
Stable and prosperous? She started with a civil war and ended by being conquered by Rome. The bit in the middle wasn’t stable either.

UK Politics@feddit.uk•British public thinks supporting Ukraine is more important than good relations with USAEnglish
321·10 months agoIf it were an option, then it might be better to selfishly keep good relations with the US. But Trump will always try to extract as much as possible, regardless of ‘good relations’. So the choice is really between helping Ukraine or not, knowing the US will be the same either way.

9·1 year agoThe 🍄, 🌰 and 💎 are just collectables. They don’t have any effect except that the score screen shows how many you collected and missed.
There is a four dimensional set of which the Mandelbrot set and Julia sets are both slices.
You would also have to double the debt of everyone in debt. Students might be quite annoyed, but not nearly as much as Alex Jones.
Fewer turns but one more Bend.

News@lemmy.world•Starbucks accused of violating Americans with Disabilities Act by charging extra for non-dairyEnglish
81·2 years agoWell the ADA only requires ‘reasonable’ accommodations. So I guess the logic of this case would be that if the substitution only costs a little bit more than the original ingredient then they should offer it at the same price. But this would still allow for business to charge extra when making the substitution would be ‘unreasonably’ expensive.

math@lemmy.sdf.org•Is there an interesting set of natural numbers defined by a number-theoretic property that is finite?
2·2 years agoThe Heegner Numbers. These are the n such that ℚ[√-n] has unique factorisation. There are exactly 9 of them:
1, 2, 3, 7, 11, 19, 43, 67, 163.
A famous fact about them is that 163 being a Heegner Number leads to e^(π√163) being very close to a whole number.

861·2 years agoI don’t know how it is in other countries, but here in the UK we still have light sockets rated for the older incandescent bulbs that needed around 60W. But LEDs are much more efficient. Sometimes you see LED bulbs with absurd things like ‘5W = 60W’ written on them, meaning that it actually uses 5W, but it’s as bright as an old 60W bulb. You basically don’t need to worry about the safety limit of the socket, since the LEDs are way under it. Of course since the socket is rated for 60W you could plug in a 60W LED, which would be as bright as an 720W incandescent bulb.
Which I suspect is what this person did to their poor fridge.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Elijah Wood was miscast as Frodo
11·2 years agoNo, I don’t think Frodo ever does tell him to jump.
More relevant is that Gollum swore an oath by the Ring not to harm Frodo, and Frodo warns him thay the Ring will hold him to his word cruelly. Then when Gollum does betray Frodo, Bam! Straight in the lava.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Elijah Wood was miscast as Frodo
16·2 years agoAs time went on, people began to notice that Frodo also showed signs of good ‘preservation’: outwardly he retained the appearance of a robust and energetic hobbit just out of his tweens. ‘Some folk have all the luck,’ they said; but it was not until Frodo approached the usually more sober age of fifty that they began to think it queer.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Elijah Wood was miscast as Frodo
24·2 years agoThey just took away all his good lines. Imagine movie Frodo laying down the law to Gollum:
In the last need, Sméagol, I should put on the Precious; and the Precious mastered you long ago. If I, wearing it, were to command you, you would obey, even if it were to leap from a precipice or to cast yourself into the fire. And such would be my command. So have a care, Sméagol!
I think if they had gone with the wise and courageous Frodo from the books then Elijah Wood would have been better at delivering this sort of line than Martin Freeman.

231·2 years agoIt’s not a linear scale from light to dark. There are three constituents: tea, milk and water. A weak cup of tea with a little milk looks different from a strong cup with a decent amount of milk. This should be a ternary plot.
The UK quite often sees words switch around in how posh they are. This is because most people want to sound posher than they really are, while the actual posh people have nothing to prove and want to seem down-to-earth. See U and non-U English.

1·2 years agoAh, the famous ‘Better known for other work.’ remark!

That’s true. I’ve heard here that edges (especially corners) are better in this regard. So in this example the top cell seems like the definite best choice.
EDIT: One thing I didn’t mention in my post is that the cells away from the solved region have an even better safety probability of 80.1%. So the best move might well be to simply start fresh in a new corner.
