Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are so many people still fine with using "The C Word" despite it being officially a derogatory slur towards women?
7·11 days agoThis. Exactly this. Thank you.

AskHistorians@lemmy.world•Why did Reagan let out all of the Asylums and close them? I get they probably that they were not the best kept but it was at least a step forward with meds and care and everything in between.English
72·15 days agol’m no historian, but the gradual degradation of the US democracy starts with Regan. He was a horrible, corrupt, incompetent president, and dissolving the mental health institutions was one of the worst things he did.
It was probably simply to reduce federal spending so that more could go to the ultra-wealthy. Or because he didn’t believe in mental illness, or some other crackpot reason.
Regardless of the motivations, the results are well documented.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux and open source getting age checking exemptions could be problematic
1·16 days agoThe author is not in favor of DRM or age verification on linux. They are simply pointing out the implications of the proposed exemptions. The real problem is that these sort of invasions of privacy are being considered AT ALL. Nomatter how they are implemented, they will be horrible for everyone except big brother.
Here is my list of Outward Mods. The first set is everything. The second set is reduced to those that I think are most important, not just fun add-ons. The third list is further reduced to my “I won’t play without” mods, for me they drastically improve the game experience.
Here’s the official wiki describing how to mod Outward (it has no workshop on Steam):
https://outward.fandom.com/wiki/Installing_Mods
It’s not hard to do, just follow the steps, and install the mod manager:
Note this works on Windows as well as any Linux distro, you just need the correct version of r2modman.
Have fun exploring Aurai!

Science Memes@mander.xyz•What Does Royal Honey Do Sexually? My Experience and QuestionsEnglish
11·20 days agoThis is a meme community. You will probably have better luck at asklemmy or one of the other advice communities.
That being said, I highly doubt that consuming royal honey will affect your sex life. This reeks of snake oil.
Thanks so much for the key! I will enjoy this game for sure, and i’ll make sure to pass it forward.
Bright Memory: Infinite
That looks like a lot of fun, could I have that?
My suggestions:
Videos: Numberphile. Very entertaning, even if you are not a math freak.
For Games: Outward
I love this game, the combat is somewhat soulslike, with, survival and open world dynamics that doesn’t hold you hand at all. With some QoL mods (meditation, shared stash, etc.) it becomes less brutal and more of a casual but still challenging rpg.

Outward 2 is coming out soon, but the original is still worth it.
But it’s obviously a joke. (at least to me)
That means that the text in no way represents anyone’s opinion, it’s sole purpose is entertainment. If anything, it’s a jab at the people that claim to do things because of the idiotic and meaningless “alpha” label, not an endorsement of sloth.
I believe this is what the old folks refer to as a “joke”.
It is an ancient form of communication, the goal of which is to induce laughter in the recipients. Factual accuracy is often not a concern, and in fact many jokes lack peer review of any kind.
I agree, it was almost like reading an onion or postillion article. So surreal.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How likely is it that there's an animal on earth that's smarter than human beings in key areas?
22·1 month agoChimpanzees are considerably better than us at short-term memory.
No, it’s fedora.
Hot take: this article is capitalist propaganda. “owning a giant company is better than being a wareslave” No shit, sherlock.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•People with bad/no hearing, can you "hear" yourself chewing when you eat?
281·2 months agoI’m not deaf, but just in case you don’t get an answer that stems from personal experience:
Your hearing loss in the one ear is (I’m assuming) caused by the ear canal being blocked. Your sensory organ still hears you chewing because the sound is transferred through the bones of your skull to your ear.
A deaf person has a different problem: their sensory organ is damaged or missing, so it doesn’t matter where the sound comes from, they don’t hear it.
By all psychologists?
I agree that there is some stupid stuff being done in the name of science, 100%. But the discipline isn’t really the deciding factor imho.
If you are interested, here is sabine explaining how academic is fundamentally broken.
The cannabis plant when left to itself doesn’t create much THC (which is what gets you high), but it is very useful for making rope and clothing, as well as oil and other products. Only when you make sure that you only have female plants (and take care of them in a certain way) do they produce lots of THC.
So just because the plant is growing somewhere doesn’t mean that someone is smoking it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Should "soft science" be considered real science?
32·2 months agoAbsolutely, yes.
The scientific method is an empirical method for acquiring knowledge through careful observation, rigorous skepticism, hypothesis testing, and experimental validation.
Any observable phenomenon should be studied using the scientific method. The alternatives are superstition or ignorance.
Psychology is a good example. It has been limited by our technology and our morals. The human brain is extremely complicated, and we cannot just disrupt peoples lives to create ideal testing conditions. But that doesn’t mean that psychology is not science. It just means that it has unique challenges.

This is propoganda. Valve is a privately-owned company, and therefore not a lackey of the olgiarcs, that’s why they are being attacked. Valve is good at business and listens to it’s customers, and Microsoft can go fuck itself sideways.
Valve’s policy is not anti-competitive. If you want to offer your game somewhere other than steam for whatever price you like, you are free to do so. If you use the steam platform to offer the game, then Steam requires you to not offer it for a lower price elsewhere AT THE SAME TIME.
That is not a monopoly, that is a clause of business contract. If a company doesn’t want to do business with valve, then they don’t have to. The 30% fee is large, but the value that comes with is massive.
