  • If you look at the age of the universe vs. how long we expect the universe to last, we are in the super early beginnings. There are supposedly countless trillions of years until the heat death of the universe.

What if we’re just early to the party? Obviously earth is pretty unique compared to most other planetary bodies we have identified. So not only do you need a bit of time, but also a bit of luck to meet all the criteria for life as humans know it to exist. Not saying their aren’t other ways life can evolve, but for carbon based life the window seems pretty small.

I also wonder about what an advanced civilization would do to mask it’s presence for it’s own safety. I imagine the concealment of an advanced civilization would be so similar to nature that to the untrained observer it would look just like any other system or galaxy. Unless you were so sure of your superiority that you wanted others to find you, I would guess hiding in plain sight would be the safest option.

I do find it puzzling that we haven’t seen anything else out there, but until a couple dozen centuries ago we thought the gods controlled the rising and setting sun, so maybe we don’t have the right technology yet. Imagine trying to explain WiFi to Plato. Colorless, tasteless, odorless, signals passing information all around us.

Then you have things like Hoag’s Object and maybe they are just messing with us.

  • I can respect some aspects of that. Not everyone is meant to or even cut out to lead. Good on you for realizing that about yourself.

What I don’t understand is how you see the obvious benefits of a union, and how a small portion of your pay check could go a long way to making your own benefits better including increasing your overall pay so that union due are less of a burden on your budget. No one said you had to be in charge. Find one other person who agrees that unions can be/do better and get them to run, because not ever person out there wants to be a greedy mob boss style union leader. A union is about to be the only thing standing between you, and that CEO thinking you’re little more than slave labor, because this administration is dismantling as many consumer and worker protections as it can.

  • I lived in a very comfortable and cozy officer barracks at Camp Humphrey in South Korea. About 400sqft. Had a living room, bedroom, full bathroom, full kitchen, and I lived by myself. The building housed a couple hundred people, all in single occupancy. I don’t see why any congressperson needs anything more than that when they shouldn’t be staying there 3/4 of their term.

There are a couple military installations around the DC area if you’re worried about securing a bunch of politicians in a single area instead of dispersed. Maybe living on post they will realize how terrible some junior enlisted barracks are and actually spend some defense money on the service members that need it the most.

I’d rather the government give them a place to stay at tax payer expense than give them more than the minimum wage of the state they represent.

  • I don’t personally consider someone who is a centerist to be progressive at all. Maybe just me though. She is exactly as progressive as Biden which is why her messaging after Biden announced he was stepping down didn’t involve and real progressive moves other than some minor tax cuts and legalizing cannabis. She lost because she is just the woman version of Joe Biden. Not that she gets much say until she is elected, but she could have come out swinging a lot harder to the left instead of joining up with Liz Cheney who also isn’t known to be that progressive. She is exactly who the DNC wanted running, which is why they didn’t hold an abbreviated Democratic primary for 2024.
