As batman movies go they’re pretty boring. It’s a dark and gritty hero, fighting dark and gritty villains, in a boring gritty city, with boring citizens. Their not bad movies. They were clearly made by clever talented people, good at what they do. But the result lacks any real contrast, just black on black on black on black. I’ll rewatch any other batman movie at the drop of a hat, no questions asked. I know I’ll be entertained. But I’m totally uninterested in rewatching the Nolan Batman movies.

Those “repeated certain melodies across the movie” have a name. It’s called a theme and is something that’s pretty common in movies, opera, musicals, symphonies, etc. An entire work can have a theme that is modified, built upon, expanded or changed as the narrative progresses. Individual characters or places can have their own unique themes. Daft Punk’s entire style is built on repetition, so it should be no surprise that their musical score work would highlight that.

The whole article wreaks of a “solution” in search of investors and a problem. No one needs a near street level view for navigation, they’ve got that already. Adding a layer of Escher-like distortion seems unlikely to make getting information at a glance from a map any better.

Everybody is just trying to look cool. Everybody probably looks like a “poser” to someone else. And in a cruel twist of irony, the inventors and early adopters of some “cool” new thing, look derivative and boring years AFTER everyone else has done it. Kids don’t have a long memory for these kinds of things; they grew up in a world where it was already old news and boring, never having experienced a world without it. This shift in perception can happen sometimes even among people old enough to have been there at the beginning. So yeah, they are just a bunch of posers trying to look cool, but aren’t we all?

I think more people just really want these kinds of stories to be real than actually believe this happened. Around 20-30 years ago, people took a little more care in composing a photo, even the amateurs. Hard drive space was still kind of pricey. Smart phones weren’t ubiquitous yet. It took some level of real investment to create the kind of photos you miss. Lego landscapes are hard. They’re tiny and big at the same time. Focus, depth of field, and lack of a background all work against you in ways a little diorama doesn’t. Combine that with more people that haven’t actually studied the craft of photography, taking more photos than ever and you get flooded with snapshots. Those lazy snapshots still happened 20-30 years ago to be sure, but nobody’s remembering them because they were forgettable then and forgotten now, kind of a survivorship bias. The same reason people argue that the music they listened to in grade school always was and forever will be the best music.

I wish I could stay asleep for 8 consecutive hours, or even go back to sleep after waking up at hour 6 without feeling like shit the rest of the day. Some of my most restorative sleeping has been 4 hours or a 30 minute nap. Sleeping more than 30 minutes and less than 4? Straight to sleepy jail. More than 4 hours, but a little less than six? Sleepy jail. More than 8 hours? Probably dead, definitely at least sleepy jail where nothing productive happens.
