Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a lofty goal you had when you started your profession, did it pan out?
1·3 months agoI wanted write super reliable software after finishing school, so I thought I would get my Professional Engineer license (American). Passed my FE exam (thermo was fun), found a PE to work under, but then Software engineering was removed from the licenses list. 🫠 Now I work in safety-certified software, but I’ll probably never get to write that “P.E.” behind my name.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People listen to others more than they listen to themselves.
51·3 months agoOur ability to rapidly ingest the opinions and experiences of others through language, media, demonstrations, etc. has given us as a species, an incredible advantage, along with some risks you noted.
For an example species following the “learn it for yourself” approach, see the very intelligent but very limited octopus.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What music/song is a good embodiement of grace? Not graceful per se but relational or dispositional grace
3·3 months agoEverlast - What it’s like No particularly graceful person in the song, except maybe the singer himself, but encourages grace and perspective from the listener.

1·3 months agoFair enough, but one person’s “basic” may be another person’s fancy tool/workflow. As far as I know most popular distros either come with a browser or install it from a GUI-based “software store” with pretty minimal effort, and then it “just works” to get on the internet. However, did your distro detect your machine’s Wi-Fi card correctly? Maybe… so I concede your point.

41·3 months agoStop all the cherry picking, this isn’t Reddit. Engage the argument in good faith.
Linux IS easier to install and use than ever before. If you stay within the FOSS ecosystem, the DE does usually work fine for what it’s made for.
But people are complaining they can’t flawlessly run Windows games in Linux. Come on. Most computer users aren’t even gamers.

“…identifying with our sinful emotions and desires” Don’t they also say that’s why he was fucking sent to Earth in the first place?
And the US evangelical team has won the gold in mental gymnastics once again.

3·5 months agoCompromises on principles, not compromises with people.
This is kinda sad, since I am genuinely worried that we’re relying on AI tools to assist with comprehending what I thought was pretty straightforward allegory.
I phrased it the way I did in case it was actually ME that was getting trolled. Hopefully that’s all it is, and I’m just underestimating the depth of trolling here.
Someone also posted an AI-generated summary for audience members whose reading comprehension skills have already atrophied.
Good luck, humanity.
“… I had to use AI to figure out what this is supposed to mean.” I can only hope you really mean “I CHOSE to IRONICALLY use AI to figure out what this is supposed to mean.”
antbricks@lemmy.todaytoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•Anyone who doesn't support the Trans Agenda(tm) is a fucking psychopath
2·5 months agothe whole (he/him) in my email signature was a wild ride… like do I add it even though I’m CIS/hetero/boring? I see all the middle aged white women in my office doing it, and that means it’s a few weeks from HR making a vague rule about it… I’m not conservative, but I don’t want to be some fake virtue signaler, since I don’t really know any trans people… but I don’t want to give some kind of passive approval of intolerance by NOT adding it… will HR flag me if I do add it? or if I don’t?

lol did you just “I know you are but what am I”? Why not address the accusation? How is “I don’t see color” different than “I don’t see gender”?
I bet you don’t see color, either…
We’re speaking German after French aristocrats gave us the names for all the fancy things we couldn’t afford when we were all peasants.

“Speed of thought”… hmmm… We can call it “Impulse Driven Development” I’m sure it’ll be great.
