United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•5.9 million French press coffee makers recalled. See affected itemsEnglish
0·7 days agoI assume they are only recalled in the United States? From reading the article, it appears there is nothing wrong with them, the problem is just that some people are too stupid to either use a non metal utensil to stir inside a glass carafe, or to stir carefully. The fix is a warning label, and sending you a plastic strirrer. This seems like the sort of thing that would only happen in the U.S.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•I need help creating an open source taxonomy for the InternetEnglish
0·12 days agoHierarchical taxonomies always run into problems because there are multiple equally valid ways to organize things. Hierarchies are inherently a wrong-headed approach. Subjects are inherently multidimensional. Hierarchies wind up forcing you to stack categorization on different properties on different levels of the hierarchy and it winds up arbitrary which ones you preference over others.
The tendency to reach for hierarchies is a bias we inherit from life in the physical world. A physical object can only be in one place at a time, so we organise physical objects in hierarchies by necessity. Rooms, cabinets, drawers, files. This is not a necessary limitation on computer system but people keep insisting of using them anyway.
How do you eat a very large package of cookies?
The same way as a smaller package, it just takes longer. You have the experience of eating cookies across more days than with the smaller package. Just as with the smaller package, you just do this until the package is done. If you get tired of eating this kind of cookie after a while, maybe it sits in your pantry untouched for a few weeks until you feel like eating that kind of cookie again.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•[Poll] Do you keep Steam running in the background all the time?English
0·12 days agoAlso to get updates, so a game is already updated when you go to play it.
I don’t normally leave it running, but I might leave it running to let all the updates happen since i might not have run it in months. Then I might forget about it and leave it running for a day of two.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you do when you get at 3am and actually wake up wake up?English
0·14 days agoIf I’m awake at 3am it’s not because I woke up, it’s because I haven’t gone to bed yet.
Power does tempt people to abuse it, and they regularly give in to that temptation. While I’m not in agreement with the person you are arguing with, I do believe people cannot be trusted with power, and therefore there need to be checks, and recourse, and the more power a person has, the more they need to be monitored rather than trusted. (Police are an example. Politicians are and example. Hollywood producers area an example.)
There is also a selection mechanism at play. People who like to abuse power seek it out.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What Linux distros feature a graphical update tool by default?English
0·16 days agoopenSUSE Tumbleweed has a graphical installer you can use to install, remove, update applications, browse, search, etc. But you still need to run a command line ‘zypper dup’ to fully update the system.
Can confirm latex foam is good stuff, I have a latex foam mattresses that has lasted decades. Not all foam is the same tho, so maybe look into what kind of foam is in whichever couch you consider. Some seem to use memory foam. If you look at one of those, make sure you know what your getting into and whether you like that. I have no experience or opinion on memory foam myself but one person I know regrets their memory foam mattress. I think it has to do with heat and feeling held in place when the foam warms up and they sink in.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Would you say it's a common trend through history for sociopathic manipulators to be popular/respected and honest intelligent people are shunned and ostracized?English
0·20 days agoAny society has norms which inevitably conflict with 100% honesty. A sociopath does not care about honesty and leverages these norms and human nature to their maximum advantage. Anyone who preferences honesty over these norms will experience friction commensurate with the difference.
As something who doesn’t like those plug in air fresheners, I’m just really curious about your sense that you needed to buy them and use them. I’m not judging here, we all get these notions of what is normal or expected from our environment. I grew up when those didn’t exist, and while bathroom air freshener sprays were a thing and not unknown in the house I grew up in, were kind of optional. I know some people for whom these seem just a thing they take for granted, and wonder to what extent they like them vs think of them as a thing they need to do in order to have good hygiene or keep a good household or whatever.
Personally, I’m turned off by them. I don’t wan’t my house smelling like something it doesn’t have any natural reason to smell like. If there is a bad smell, I want to know and take care of it and not cover it up. Some such fragrances actually really bother me, though it depends, but what I just said applies even to a fragrance that doesn’t bother me and that I like.
Have these become a thing that people think of as something they just need to do?
As someone whose circadian rhythm is inherently later then most, I don’t necessarily want to call this “lazy”, but at one small company I worked for this worked to my advantage because the President would see me working late all the time, but didn’t see what time I came in. Didn’t save my ass per se but didn’t hurt…
It’s a very basic principle, that you don’t create powers that could be abused. That they haven’t been abused yet does not make doing so ok. It like saying it’s ok that my government was given the power to lock people up with no reason or due process because they haven’t used it yet.
And also until the committee designing it has it members on it representing the interests of users. The point that this was lacking in the original is-a-trap article is an important one and is also being missed.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do older generations pee all over the toilet seat?English
0·24 days agoI think this is the answer, but peeing on the seat is another level of dysfunctional. Peeing standing up without lifting the seat is not ok even by guys-peeing-standing-up standards. And peeing on the seat while sitting down suggests another problem, and then if you have that problem, not wiping off the seat is even more inconsiderate than leaving a few splashes on the rim of the bowl itself. I have to wonder if some of these boomers have some dementia.
Have you ever used bank software, or some government services site? It is often really hard to not get the idea that it was designed and run by idiots. As someone who’s worked as a software developer most of my life, it is not difficult for me to believe it, either.
They also received far more abuse than usb cables. We don’t generally anchor one end of a usb cable and then walk around erratically for hours everyday within the range of the cable (and now and then pushing it) with the device on the other end of the cable.
Those cables _were_engineered for more abuse.

Where do you get the need to regrow them part? I didn’t see anything about that in the linked article. And the “explosive” part just means they erect them really fast.
