Yeah, I really love the look of Posteo, but I use personal domains for mail. Pretty sure they still don’t support those. If they did I probably already would have signed up with them.
Disclaimer: I have not checked if any of them have gone crazy recently.
Ha! Pretty sure the drama would have made it to us if so.
That one is on the short list!
Yeah, I’m looking at price increases everywhere so far since I have rock-bottom data capacity needs but use a few personal domains with a lot of aliases. I guess that’s the price of freedom.
I hear good things about their service but Australia is a no-go for me personally in terms of data privacy. Looking at EU/Swiss/Norway to start with, we’ll see how it goes.
Yyyeah, packing my shit and looking for another non-Five Eyes provider as we speak. I’ll give up encryption at rest if I have to, matters far less than not giving psychos another dime.
It can be insanely hard to find any demand for them if you’re talking about trading locally rather than selling online and shipping. That’s probably the biggest real obstacle.
In terms of legal or regulatory issues, no, nothing is stopping you unless maybe you’re dealing in porn-focused games in a state with strict anti-obscenity laws. Don’t lay the 18+ doujin soft out on the Sunday flea market table in front of your local superior court.
For a “lean back” editor (as opposed to “lean in” like Vim or Emacs) that’s menu and mouse friendly while still being lightweight overall, sure, why not? Kate is good for that, Geany also good. You might also look at Sublime (not open source) or a clone like CudaText (open source, bit more of a retro UI).
I wouldn’t use those myself but my preferred posture is different. Use the glove that fits.
Just in case: So-net is Sony’s ISP in Japan. If you haven’t lived there and used their services, this doesn’t affect you.
Not saying Sony doesn’t have a lot they need to fix or anything, just don’t freak out unnecessarily. End PSA.
Oh yeah, seconding the recommendation for GL.iNet routers with OpenWrt (technically their slightly modified fork but it’s very close to stock) preinstalled as an easy way to get your feet wet. They’re pretty nifty little travel routers, good to have if you don’t already make a habit of putting something between your gadgets and hotel wifi.
I’m running it on an OpenWrt One and loving it. Not the best perf-per-dollar hardware but it does what I need at the moment, is completely open, and supports the project.
There’s a learning curve for sure. You might consider buying the cheapest possible router that supports it and experimenting with that on the side before overhauling your main network. $30-40 (or cheaper used) for the peace of mind of knowing you aren’t completely up the creek if something goes wrong.
I would be wary of this one for non-AI variants of user freedom concerns, including ability to customize the environment to suit oneself which is one reason that many use Linux over, say, MacOS. YMMV based on preference, but losing that freedom-in-practice is a pretty big step down in my book.
I didn’t know about Redcore, looks like a pretty neat easy onboarding for the Gentoo madness. Thanks for the link.
Lunar
Seconding these on Sega CD. Great times.
You don’t mention Saturn, but if you’re an RPG guy I would add it just for Grandia.
Edit: And Dragon Force, and Panzer Dragoon Saga, and…
Oh boy more sand!
Summerset not happening in my lifetime. Sad.
