    toxic men

Kinda sad and ironic, that the term “toxic masculinity” began as a way to describe how culture manufactures a harmful concept of what it means to be a man, and it seeps into men and damages them like a toxin… but now we use it to mean that the man himself is toxic, undermining the whole notion of thinking of the problem as systemic rather than one of individuals.

Anyway, patriarchy is absolutely demolishing men right now, and the political right is saying “women’s fault” while the left is saying “lmao skill issue”. If we don’t get our shit together and start treating this seriously, we’re gonna have big problems.

  • Patriarchy.

Persecuting trans folks keeps men and women in their “appropriate” boxes. And — crucially — keeps them seeing each other as opponents.

The vast majority of men are worse off under patriarchy than they would be if we had real gender equity.

But as long as those in power are constantly threatening your masculine privileges in case you question the regime, most men will fall in line — and most women will understandably be skeptical of men who claim to advocate for men’s liberation.

Meanwhile, trans panic keeps attention on whether women are being sufficiently feminine and therefore fulfilling their “duty” as sex maids.

Honestly, if you wanna disguise your love of patriarchy as something else, trans issues are a great way to do it.

  • I mean, it’s a joke. The question is just: is it a good joke?

In some ways, it punches up, and — ugh, I’m about to do the “explain the joke” thing — shows something interesting by putting a harmful effect of patriarchy on men (loneliness) next to a harmful effect of patriarchy on women and suggesting they’re connected. It’s a solid premise.

But in other ways, it’s not really punching up. Most men don’t quite benefit from patriarchy enough to make up for the ways they suffer due to patriarchy, so taking a jab at them by connecting the two is kinda shitty from that perspective.

Also, I think most men don’t really think about it, and just accept a toxic concept of superiority over women (and right to affection from women) as a fact of being a man rather than a flimsy consolation prize for playing along with a system that hurts them.

So it’s kinda bleak, leaving that part unexamined and just leaving it as a “you problem” while taking a more systemic view when it comes to the pervasiveness of men hating women.
