I think there were two reasons for that. One was that without centralized server where element could flash nunbers in front of VC there would not be much funding just like other open source protocols like xmpp experience. It also attracted more people because you didn’t have to think of servers or bother with the whole federation concept (just join the main server, as everyone is there already).

Additionally matrix is pretty good distributed database but imo horrible chat protocol. It’s extremely heavy on resources making other small servers impossible to compete or run on the same terms as the big ones. Back in the days I was running one of the top 5 size matrix server but I realized that the ever growing database, load issues when users joining large rooms and ton of other problems all, I went back to xmpp. It made me realized how crazy expensive and unsustainable in long run was running essentially text chat app became, and that could be better spent elewhere. Matrix is basically not designed for the purpose it’s pushed for. It might be great as a communication platform in a organization or corporation or government agency ( you can accurately track the room state from its inception so great to have an overview of who, when, what). For fedi-like chat servers XMPP which can run on a potatoe is much better choice. Both from financial perspective (as your small server joining a big room does not affect you cause you don’t need to replicate the room state essentially killing your server), but also environmental (its light and scales depending on your community needs better).

I’m personally against clonning communities as i think it’s largely defragmenting already small communities into seperate little islands. The idea of federation is to create spaces where people can participate together no matter the instance they are from. Creating copies just goes against this idea IMO. One does not need to be on the isntance to participate in communities. That’s the beauty of federation. I understand there might be reasons sometimes to do it, but if your idea is to just copy bunch of them so that you’re the mod, I find it a waste.

As for disroot’s branding of such communities. I think it would require admins to be part of the moderation of such community as it gives others the impression its related or at least supported endorsed by the team. Our idea for the instance was to make it more of a free for all approach then curated set of communities (eg. Beehav). So it makes sense that disroot branded communities are somewhat rated to disroot team or a project. At the same time other communities hosted on the server can use whatever branding they want.

So to sum up my position. I am rather against this idea. Using branding creates association for others. Even if you use disclaimers that it isn’t. Since your communities are independent, I would rather see you create a unique branding to your comms so that people seeing them could straight away know who are they moderated and run by.

That’s undoubtedly perk of having a house, parking or dedicated spot. But even without those at least here in NL infrastructure as is is pretty good even for those without didcated charging spot. I thin what should be easily done is slow charging spot on every parting spot. Cost wise it’s not much and pulling max 2.5kw should not be much of an issue for the grid. In that way every car would have a dedicated charging to fill up over night if needed. Cost of such implementation wouldn’t be to big either.

It looks like the goal will be more people getting pissed at the climate activists. Which will make it harder for those who are actually doing something more then just publicity stunts.

Yeah infra is the issue. Which is stupid as providing simple (16A) socket per car would be sufficient solution for most cars. You come back from work or your commute and just plug the car to slow charger. Over night you are charged enough for next day.

Nah. Anxiety is something you have for first month owning your first EV. Once you adjust to the different way of using the car you realize you drive the same way as petroleum car. One important thing is being able to charge at home IMO. Even from just a socket (16A) is sufficient for most daily cases.

But all those actions are exactly same as signing petition. Just louder and in many cases made more about the protesters then the protest. It’s more like doing something so that you feel you tried and media writes about it which males you feel like you did the change. But nature doesn’t give two shits about the protests neither is the current economy of consumption which leads us to the disaster. Being on the internet, discussing this matter right now is contributing to the problem and only shows that our life style, which we are happy with is the problem.

And yeah blocking the street causes much more pollution plus losses off everyone, so not sure what’s the goal there either

But how is that action going to stop the water from rising. I am too very much concerned with climate change but I don’t see much point in those actions. They don’t really bring anything to the table nor have any impact on the matter, apart from antagonizing people to the issue perhaps.

Battery size I think here is the difference. Leaf, specially the old ones come with 22kwh battery. My Zoe is 52kWh. Think newer Leafs also come with 52/64kwh packs but are much more expensive then Zoe. At least that was the case when I was researching it when buying a car last year.

And this is the most scary part of it. Specially that it isn’t just France or Germany but pretty much across the board young people voted for biggest populists out there.

Yeah. I did quite some research and found Zoe to be the best price for range while not being a giant expensive suv. I think specially on european roads its pretty good choice.

Though those are dirt cheap so as a second car to drive in low range (if you work close by or when need to do shopping etc) it’s perfect.

Second hand Renault Zoe user here. I have the model from 2020 with 52kWh battery. Things are pretty ok I think as far as the interior and exterior, but we had major issue with the engine that had to be swapped (good the car was under warranty still in the dealership we bought it from). For the rest it’s pretty smooth ride. The range of the car in spring/summer gets to about 350km so its pretty good. The SOH is 91.3%. Ranault’s warranty on battery is still active until 2028 or 80 000km or when battery’s SOH drops below 75% so for now I am not worried about this. I think once the battery gets low and outside of warranty there will most certainly be more developed infrastructure of third-party battery module maintenance so it should be possible to get the pack to it’s original state for not gigantic sums of money.

That youtuber is pretty much paid advertisement for startups. I would not take this guy serious. I have seen also number of videos about this type of turbine and also some debunks. Harmony turbine is project that has not yet shown results apart from lots of publicity. I will try to find a nice video I saw about it, but yeah I wouldnt put too much hope in that. Specially when something’s featured on that youtube channel.

Solarthermal is something I thought about but seeing how little is produced on the roof now I wonder how much impact it will have. I know the efficiency of solar collectors is about 80% while solar panels are 20-30%, but installation of solar collectors adds more complexity with plumbing and in summer you again have situation where you have nowhere to spend the heat on and need to either close the system (drain it) or cover the collector. Plus it’s not that cheap. It’s mainly reason why we went for solar panels as although solar panels require more space to provide eqiuvalent power, the low maintenance and the fact the energy can be spent on more stuff then just heating water. So I’m looking at diversifying the energy source. Thats why looking into wind.
