Murica will just break the deal next time Trump has a tantrum, it’s probably just quicker to nod and smile. These deals can’t be worth the ink at this stage.

This is what the FDA used to control?
There are different rules for survival in a place where corporate profit is more valued than human life. Health Insurance companies will kill way more kids than this guy and his sales pitch. The bar for survival is getting higher, ‘she knew the risks’ but couldn’t spot the bullshit: the people who can might survive, and (maybe) their kids.
It’s like Nestle’s formula division setting up shop in North America instead of Africa. The WHO stepped in during that crisis, but I think the USA abandoned that safeguard too.
This is what the majority voted for. Freedom to do harm to fellow Americans. Deregulation. No experts. Survival of the fittest style freedom.

They did their own research. Let them enjoy their freedom from ‘experts’.

The question can also be applied to why people believe in God / follow a religion. The notion of monarchy has (in the UK at least) been tied into pseudo religious notions of ‘chosen by god’ or similar, so it ties into that belief system for better or worse. (Historically the tie-in was to co-opt the obedience baked into faith, but that’s probably lost on modern monarchists and believers.)
People everywhere develop unhealthy relationships with those that are oblivious to them, or outright parasitic and damaging. This is another of those that’s been wrapped up in tradition and ceremony under the guise of ‘normality’ and the status quo. ‘Ignorance is bliss’ may apply.

“a secular government” in theory only.

It’s got nothing to do with taking it with you. It’s about having a safe space to inhabit for the 25+ years you might live for, at an age where walking, talking and feeding yourself become increasingly difficult if not impossible. That stash of money might need to cover part or full time care, possibly advanced medical care in the case of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Get the wrong type of sick at the start of retirement and that 25 year stash of money can be gone in five. They either then become a financial burden to their family, need full time housing and care from their family, or are abandoned.
These people don’t think they’re God Kings, they’ve just lived long enough to see how the world treats people with no money, and their bodies and minds aren’t always young enough to stay in the workforce. Just like people trying to make it to the end of the month, they’re trying to stretch their savings for 10-25 years with an almost 100% chance of having crippling medical bills. Maybe you don’t want to acknowledge that because the quicker they drop dead, the more money you stand to inherit.
You sound as if you’ve never had any meaningful contact with somebody over 70.

Depending upon the age of the bios, it may not recognise USB sticks over a certain size. If you can burn your Linux ISO to a CD-R you might have more luck.

Historically, I had a callout to a place where the machine rebooted whenever a train went past: crappy PSU with a dry joint.
Also a machine with an underspecified PSU that couldn’t provide enough power. A physical or optical drive being accessed were enough to tip it over the edge.

No, this is very traditional tribalism where people of different skin colours and religions are vilified and blamed for anything and everything as convenient to the narrative. The same tribalism that’s been using ethnic cleansing as a solution since we were primates. The same tribalism that invents enemies to silence disagreement and disenfranchise dissenters. The dissenters would be the individualists in this case, and would likely be thrown over the walls.

Endgame capitalism is squeezing harder since the 2008 crash and then Covid. They predicted polarising of politics and ideologies. We’re seeing tribalism as a reaction to fewer resources and harsher conditions, all of which are down to greed and oligarchy. They’ve succeeded in getting us to fight amongst ourselves instead of them.

I’m really going to miss Firefox

A harmonica is more portable.

“These options did not add any real value” made me smile. That’s the Windows 11 tagline!

They also like to downgrade whichever paid version of the app you have every couple of years and introduce a new extra-premium-plus-pro tier. Accurate predictions but scammy bullshitters selling it. Weawow can use same prediction models without rewarding bait-and-switch assholes.

If they’ve got a billion dollars they also own their own track and can pay other drivers to lose races against them.

You’re not entirely wrong in that philosophy. At best we can hope for allies some of the time, but typically that arrangement will last only when mutually beneficial. We’re not owed anything, and that includes loyalty, allegiance, love etc.
I think the majority of people we experience in a lifetime will be parasitic, and will take infinitely more than they have the capacity to give. Even the “good ones”.
I think it’s fine to feel what you’re feeling, you have your eyes wide open and are seeing relationships for what they are, without idealism. How to reconcile that understanding with a happy, fulfilling life is another thing entirely.
Bullshit. The EU is far better off without us. They know it and we know it.
