Reddit users are called Redditors. What are Lemmy users called? Lemmitors? Lemmings?
How well are the Lemmy fediverses growing? How many daily unique users do we have on this service? Will we overtake Reddit someday?
What differences should I get used to over here from what I was used to on Reddit? Thanks in advance.
You shouldn’t get suspended for calling out nazis or demanding liberty and justice for all, including women. To self-actualize and unfold as each of our unique DNA is meant to, in the short time we are conscious stardust, the cosmos observing itself. This truth sets us free from the supernatural baggage and conditional belonging.
you know how if you actually read the articles posted to reddit instead of just the titles, you’re more informed than a good 90% of the comments? that percentage is even higher on lemmy.
Hello young Lemming.
Until you say otherwise, we will suppose you like to eat beans, to compute with Linux and to watch Star Trek. Lemmy is a part of the fediverse which is a facinating
piecepuzzle of software to learn about. You absolutly don’t need to to use Lemmy though… All you need to know is that there is tiny little websites called instances working together to make Lemmy. You barely notice which one you access but many lemmings will proudly tell you where you are. Each instance has its own moderation team and rules so check it before writting in a new community (equivalent of sub) and relax 'cause one mod won’t ruin you experience. Here is a first community go explore [email protected]. Ask for recommandation.
Enjoy!
Someone else was just asking this yesterday so I’ll link to one of my responses. It’s in reference to someone telling them about a couple instances to avoid (such as .ml, lemmygrad, and hexbear):
I don’t mind Lemmings, but Lemurs is appealing too.
“lemmings” is a term often used to refer to mindless followers, so no thanks on that one
In my experience lemmy is like a smaller reddit. Similar political vibe with maybe more zero-tolerance ethical purity fixation.
Lemon parties?
I use piefed not lemmy, so I have no idea what I’d be called. Mbin is another set of software that talks using the same protocol (so even though you’re using lemmy on lemmy.world, you’ll see me posting from nord.pub using piefed). Different softwares have different good and bad points. Don’t be afraid to open an account on an instance that uses a different one to take it for a spin.
There are also various optional frontends/apps to change the viewing experience.
As of @[email protected]’s last Fediverse ‘census’ a month ago, the Threadiverse (Lemmy+Piefed+Mbin+PyLova) had about 38,800 monthly active users.
I actually posted a new post yesterday. If you don’t see it, there may be a federation issue.
Regardless, the most up to date number is 41565 MAU (relatively steady year-over-year, but slightly up).
Edit: I don’t post it, but since OP asked about daily users, there are at least 15444 DAU (Lemmy: 12864, Piefed: 2580, Mbin: ? (doesn’t report DAU)).
It must have just federated when I tapped on the link; thanks again for your dedication!

Yeah, it’s weird like that. I had that happen with one com I subscribed to, nothing for a month and then no issues since.
thanks again for your dedication!
Thanks and by the way, I’m using your defederation post in the fedigrow’s “Community Building Wiki” (“Visualization of Threadiverse Defederation”).
I never posted my more complicated version (all instances as of August with at least 50 MAU) since people were already having trouble with the first one, but if you’d like I can send it to you when I get a chance (I think I DM’ed you a work-in-progress version of it at one point?), or post it myself for you to reference.
One thing I think including more instances demonstrates better is some of the ‘cliques’, mainly the similar defederation patterns between ‘flotilla’ instances. It also helps to show why the .zip instances are better for people who want less top-down defederation applied to them.

I’d say post for you. That’s what [email protected] is for me. If other people like it, great, but I’m doing the analysis because I’m interested in it.

I believe we chatted briefly about your next version, but I don’t recall ever seeing it. I’d say post it, so I can link to it easier. I’m not sure how I’d host it in the wiki otherwise (not very familiar with that part of Piefed).

Sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing the new version :)
not many niche things have had their communities come over. I would love if the arc mmos or pathfinder communities were mainly here but over time I think more and more folk are realizing how important it is to not be under corpo thumbs.
“Lemmings” seems to be the consensus, and the primary differences in my experience are:
- Higher average quality of discussion; fewer trolls and bad-faith or dumb comments, although not 0
- Less users, so less niche communities
I think these are related; if we blindly wish for more users, we may attract the bad faith posters from Reddit and other more popular sites and make things worse. To improve Lemmy, we want to attract genuine people with niche interests (like you, I hope!). For now, I would learn to appreciate the smaller community, and think of any friends you could invite who would enjoy it here. No need to try to overtake Reddit, lest we become like them.
If you find communities you do like, you can subscribe to them and visit a feed of only your subscribed communities, or visit All to find new stuff. If you find your feed keeps showing you posts you’ve already seen, there’s a setting to hide viewed posts. Keep an eye out for common usernames-- some of us post often enough that you’ll see us around! You can also check the instance that people are from (after the @ in their username; for you, lemmy.ca). Some instances are more generalist (eg. lemmy.world, lemmy.ca), while others (eg. lemmy.ml, db0) will have policies or a culture that encourages more specific types of users to join that instance. This info can be useful.
And most importantly, don’t be afraid to post! Posting is typically much easier here (fewer rules, no auto-rejecting, no global karma to use as a requirement) and we have fewer posts so it’s almost always appreciated.
Be active, block instances with nazis. I recently overcame the boring repetitive perspective of lemmy by moving to a “All/top recent 6 hours” feed. It feels active now
moving to a “All/top recent 6 hours” feed.
How do you do that?
Some advice, stay away from .ml, Know that .world is moderated almost exactly like Redditc and from my experience, most lemmy users like to be called “socialists”.
.ml is fine generally, this is coming from someone who was tempbanned from .ml communities for stupid reasons
Every instance has its quirks, you determine whether if you want to engage with any particular moderation scheme.
- Lemmy.blahaj.zone has zero tolerance for anti-trans sentiment and intentional misgendering, to explictly be a LGBTQ+ safe space.
- Lemmy.ml has less tolerance for anti-Russia and anti-China views due to its Marxist Leninist origins but isn’t too bad otherwise.
- Feddit.org follows German law which blurs the line between anti-Israel commentary and antisemitism.
- Lemmy.ca is not an unconditional free speech haven either, the server’s existence is contingent on following Canadian laws including ones barring hate speech.
.ml has no tolerance for factual information that disproves their propaganda. This is a documented fact.
Not disagreeing with you, that indeed is how some of those mods behave.
It’s just that I’ve been around this place long enough not to write off the instance, nutomic or dessalines over it. That’s a personal decision of mine, but you or anyone else can make a different decision for themselves.
What’s wrong with .ml?
There’s a community here called MeanwhileOnGrad that tracks their bullshit ideology via proof of posts and content made by not only those there, but the admin team that is well known pro-russsin pro-Chinese authoritarianism.
Many people will try and tell you otherwise, but those that are critical, have the receipts to show as proof of the claim. I’d advise you to go to MeanwhileOnGrad and see for yourself.
Thanks, good info. That is one thing I think I like less about Lemmy vs Reddit. On reddit we only had to worry about certain subreddits, but here we have to worry about communities and entire instances… I’ll just have to get used to it and maybe make a new account on another instance after comparing them some more.
For sure. At the end of the day, it’s going to be your experience that drives your choices. Sure, others can help guide you, but you will see for yourself after a while how things roll.
And if you want an example of the type of people I talk about, here is a discussion am current in as we speak. This is how these people are. They cannot speak against the atrocities committed by Russia- even when the answer is should be obvious.
Wow. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. You have more patience than I do.
Centrists here (lots on piefed, some of the main developers for piefed apps hardcoded leftist instance blocks without telling anyone until they got caught, that is their vibe) lose their mind about leftists even when the world outside is drowning in radical rightwing fascist movements openly adgocating for violence, racism and faacism. Also did any of them warn you that there are rightwing VERY VERY toxic parts of the fediverse that mainly don’t connect to the bigger communities because they are simply too violent and toxic to federate with normal people?
sigh
You will run into stupid leftists here, maybe that will be a new experience for you if haven’t because they were excluded from all the other places you have been but shrugs the idea that this is some problem that needs to be shoved in the face of new users is kind of pathetic and says more about them than it does about .ml at this point. Even if it is a new experience so what, they are plenty more intelligent leftists with nuanced views, you know, like how humans tend to be…
What do you have to say about the mounds of evidence piled up on MeanwhileOnGrad that verviees exactly what everyone says about that shithole?
There’s a difference between words and proof.
There’s a difference between words and proof.
Yes and you are going to use a circlejerk instance as your proof?
Again, EVIDENCE exists. Their own words. Screenshots of the bullshit they spread is there in black and while.
You have noting but words.
Tankies. Plenty of ml folks are fine though.
Welcome. There are dozens of us Lemmings.
As in, 2 dozen? Almost?
“Lemmings” lmao.
“Lemmings”. Welcome! I also had a 20yo account on reddit, came over here several months back and never looked back. It’s much more like reddit used to be here. Just browse all, that’s what i do. Make communities you want to see.
