The Social Security Administration (SSA) unveiled Thursday that it would use the social platform X to make announcements going forward, instead of traditional press releases or memos typically posted to the agency’s website.

Need a government bill forcing all federal comms like this to go over the government’s own federated instance (with RSS please).

Thanks for that useful tool. I haven’t been over there since I was banned in 2020. Stomach turning stuff, just lightly skimming for a few minutes. Any return to normalcy would just shut it down. Free speech ain’t just disinformation & hate. Everyone on there should be ashamed of themselves.

“I know this probably sounds very foreign to you — it did to me as well — and not what we are used to, but we are in different times now,” she added.

    Blink if you’re in danger.

So how can US citizens be banned from twitter and expected to have access to government twitter ?

Appealing bans by suing them over first amendment right to petition (yes it covers more than freedom of speech)

Kind of crazy to me that governments aren’t massively interested in hosting their own fediverse instances. It has huge appeal of providing announcements on a broader platform while also controlling your instance and still being from a .gov source.

That requires IT knowledge from a recent decade. Many municipalities have only recently discovered dialup internet.

It makes no sense for the SSA to run a fediverse instance, because they don’t need to host community discussions.

They need to be posting on their website with an RSS feed, just like every other institution.

Makes me wonder how much of this is a scheme to force people to sign up / re-sign up to X to counter the exodus.

They’ve been saying this for other fed agencies from the get go so, yes?

As embarrassing as this is, if this bit of appeasement even slightly diminishes the damage they’re going to do to the SSA then I’m okay with it.

Using Twitter violates my religious beliefs. What’s the option for me to view these announcements? Recall that “Christian” corporations have successfully argued that being required to fill out a form because their health insurance won’t cover birth control is a burden on their religious beliefs.

    * for press releases and announcements

Headline makes it sound like internal communications, but that’s not the case at least currently. Still, we shouldn’t rely on third party services for important info - especially one that sometimes requires login to view

Yeah, and most non-Nazis have long left the platform and deleted their account. The log-in issue is a huge one. It effectively blocks a massive portion of the US from getting important information about money that is theirs.
