What kind of a weenie patents this shit. It doesn’t even deserve to be saved to a “one drive” - should’ve died the moment someone spoke it aloud in a meeting and the person who spoke it sent to counseling

Pure speculation, but I 100% expect XBox game pass to start including ad breaks on the paid tier and an even more expensive paid tier free from ads.

Advertising is the most prolific form of environmental pollution wrought by commerce.

It needs to become as socially acceptable as smoking, and every instance of it must be exhaustively scrutinised and required to be justified.

Advertising is a cancer to society.

You have beautiful nature scenery ruined by billboards. Assholes that drive around town with the electronic billboards as if driving down the street doesn’t already look like 90s internet advertising herpes. That’s not enough, lets let assholes boat around with an electronic billboard at the beach. Turn on the radio in your car? Fuck you, enjoy all the adverts to listen to one song; oh yeah we bought all the local stations and synced it up so switching channels doesn’t help. Turn on your TV, enjoy advertising while you try to get to whatever steaming service you want to watch; only to be greeted with advertising there. Enjoy the product placement in the show you chose to watch because you know you crave adverts. Did you want to read something on our website, well we’ll advertise our subscription to you. Check your mail? Here’s a pound of adverts for the maybe one or two bills you got; oh and the postal service isn’t profitable. Not that it should be, but all that advertising rubbish causes financial strain, and it can’t even be used as toilet paper. Anything online is littered with adverts, even then dumpster fires like reddit made a workaround to combat ad-blockers by making stupid bot advertising posts. I’m not telling you what the best pizza place in town is; jog on into the fog. It’s even infected appliances. I like my refrigerator as dumb as a box of rocks. Then you get text advertising on top of cold call bullshit. And there’s wankers that come to your door to advertise and at the store that try to sell you a phone or internet plan.

MicroSlop can get bent. I will never play a game with advertising.

Sorry for the long rant; but when it comes to advertising all I can think these days is STFU, leave me alone, and let me wipe my ass with these dollar bills instead of buying something.

If our attention spans were shrinking because of constantly being bombarded with attention shifting distractions (which I personally think is nonsense but everyone else seems to believe is indisputable) wouldn’t ads be a form of mass violence?

It’s like they are trying to create more reasons for people to finally ditch windows and xbox. If they wanted to go all-in on this, they should have done it before Linux gaming got pretty good.

What a strange question. Proton is pretty incredible, pretty much anything that’s not behind some kind of kernel level anti-cheat works on linux now. Native port or not, if people’s games work on something like the steam deck, steam machine, or other similar devices, then it’s likely people will swap when microsoft makes windows/xbox worse. It’s become really easy unless you play mostly competitive shooters, or need certain professional software rather on your PC like photoshop or something.

As for your question, I can’t say exactly what game was the last one I paid for that is native, because I usually don’t even have to check. I know Mina the Hollower and Hollow Knight Silksong are native linux games.

You’re missing the fact Microsoft will force all Windows software to have ads. Proton&Wine won’t deter this encroachment. My question was more rhetorical, but it can indeed be taken personal.

I can’t say exactly what game was the last one I paid for that is native, because I usually don’t even have to check

Then you won’t be ready for when all software is required have ads on them, as countries are already requiring ID checks to run them. This train isn’t stopping until everyone collectively turns the switch.

That isn’t the impression I’m getting from the article. It doesn’t sound like it’s something that’s programmed into games themselves, as much as running on the operating system. If you take a look at the patent itself, it specifically mentions

“…obtaining a promoted content trigger event from the interactive software application based at least partially on content of the interactive software application; suspending the user’s interaction with the interactive software application; and presenting promoted audiovisual content to the user.”

I believe this is something that’s primarily going to impact Microsoft store/Xbox purchases, if they do anything with it.

If it requires new games to send out pause screen triggers so it can overlay ads, I don’t see why wine would have to do anything with them.

They’ll stop your word processor to send you an ad. Non native Linux apps won’t cease this.

Nothing in the article or patent implies they’ll be covering all applications you run on windows in ads. It’s specifically just for listening for a system call signifying that a game is paused, and then overlaying ads while it’s paused.

I think it sucks, I also think you’re reading too far into it. Microsoft doesn’t develop most windows software, and I’m not sure how you’re expecting them to force every windows dev to incorporate ads into theirs. Wine/proton don’t have to recreate the system library that serves ads on top of your games, to have it serve ads for Microsoft.

If it’s a library that’s bundled in with a game release (similar to DRM like denuvo), then that has to be done manually for every piece of software. I cannot imagine it being realistic that every single dev bundles it in that way, or that it would last long before cracked copies of games strip it out.

If I had known the past would be like this I would have stayed in the future.

I timetravelled back to see a time before most animals went extinct and yet the lack of curiosity in people about the processes that are happening now that will shape the earth for hundreds of thousands of years is as insufferable as The Timetraveller’s Guide warned me it would be.

Now if I just can remember where I put/will put my time machine I am ready to go home.

I never want to hear people talk again about artificial intelligence excitedly with hope or fear for the immense potentials while ecociding natural intelligence without a second thought… like fuck this time period is cynically crushing to the soul…

Lol yeah but you are forgetting how the years keep getting shorter and shorter as more and more of their budget is cut and/or privatized.

We only never make it past 2100 in Pre-Temporal Austerity years.

Have you considered maybe making fewer games on lower quality? Not every game needs to be equivalent to a $200 million CGI fest blockbuster

I don’t know what the budget of Factorio and Rimworld was, but they are better than anything that came out of all AAA devs combined in the past decade.

I think I might just join the Amish, the most technically advanced thing they have is a Harmonica. Let’s see how capitalism tries to ruin life when you don’t buy anything.

I do too, but it is easy enough just to simulate most of that stuff with AI so what could be the harm in getting rid of all that if if our pre-emptive belief AI can just replace it all is founded on unshakable and absolute faith?

The nice thing about this ideology is I can pretend to be cold and rational while behaving like and politically alligning myself with evangelical christian end times crazy cultists, and the confluence of money and power just feels natural and right!

I mean, ‘get’. Almost certainly used in their subscription service, don’t you think? So you can ….rent the game, for definitely not free. But there will probably be a second tier that has no ads! …. At first, before just less ads, and then…
