I’m familiar with the idiom. I was making very dry commentary.

The image is literally Iron Fist, who is:

          • a martial artist,
          • a character now owned by Disney — by many accounts an authoritarian empire,
          • and a role/show that got a lot of criticism over authenticity and whether Disney/Marvel did justice to the character.

So my brain basically went: “Under an iron fist, can we trust the product?” → Iron Fist.

Which is obviously absurd and convoluted, but it wasn’t intended dismissively. I can see now how it probably came across that way though, so sorry about that.

I just naturally assume a person who replies with that image in this discussion is an unaware child or idiot because, and this might come as a shock to you, those types of people exist on the internet in no small amount.

I don’t concern myself with peoples’ opinion of me overmuch, so if someone draws an incorrect (or fuck it, correct) conclusion about me from my posts, so be it. I’m fine being considered an idiot when I post something idiotic because 30 minutes later I’ll be on a different post saying something perhaps more profound.

But as much as I don’t care about being idiotic from time to time, it’s never my intent to make someone feel mocked or dismissed, and given that as you correctly point out the internet is full of pricks who are only too happy to act that way, and the inscrutable arc of thoughts that the image alone utterly failed to communicate, it’s perfectly reasonable to conclude that I was being a deliberate asshole. Hence the apology. Sorry you didn’t get a more serious response to your comment. I’d give one here, but I don’t really feel qualified to wade into Chinese politics.
