Let’s not forget how Madrid (both the city and the Autonomous Community) are ruled by far-right politicians who are making all they can to turn the region into an usian hellscape. But hey, democracy. Madrid has (almost) always been a fascist region. They had some pretty decent mayors (like Manuela Carmena) but I guess it was too much comunism for them to bear, so after her, they turned right pretty hard.
This kind of barbarism doesn’t surprise me at all, the government has enabled and even encouraged it for decades and now the people are reaping what they sow with their votes.
When a developer bought the building Maricarmen had lived in for 71 years, she was offered the chance to buy her apartment for €247,000 (£212,000), an impossible sum for a pensioner.
They then raised her rent from €500 to €1,650 a month, while she receives a state pension of €1,350. An unnamed “prominent” writer offered to pay the €1,150 difference indefinitely but their offer was ignored.
The goal was to evict her, not to make her pay the higher rent. Even those 1650€ a month were probably deemed too low when they can simply make another BnB from her apartment and earn twice that.
This has been happening in Madrid for a while sadly. And people keep voting those fascist assholes despite this to the point they win easily. At a certain point, you start considering this is self-inflicted pain.
Wonder if she even knew about the offer? Sick the way no matter where in the world how we treat the elderly.
