I wouldn’t be surprised if that effectively happens in some industries, specifically in the arts or sports where there are tons of applicants chasing a dream. There is a reason why people know of the casting couch.
That said, I really don’t see that happening in any IT, science, medical, or engineering field anytime soon. Unlike in the arts, I don’t see how an industry which needs a certain level of technical competence will find it so widely available that people would pay them for experience.

While this is most definitely a common sense take, in reality “maximize shareholder value” will push companies no choice but to automate these jobs for worse results.
They absolutely will try to automate these jobs, with some of the industries I listed seeing this process continue for generations. I just don’t think it will ever get to a point where people will pay to work at a tech company and tech companies will want to use the labor of these people.

That setup is technically true of college programs that require internships. You’re not paying the business but you work for them for free while paying your university. Although I don’t think that’s what the term “paid internship” generally refers to.

They could even lend you the money you need to pay for that training, how nice of them! Then, when you do start getting paid, they can take repayment (with interest) directly from your paycheck. How convenient!
They could also pay people in a form of crypto that’s only accepted at the store in town that happens to be owned by the same people as your employer. Try trading that crypto for real cash, and you’re fired.

Most people don’t know any history of labor. I barely know anything and I’m interested in the topic. It’s frustrating. I mean, I can accept the ingnorance. That’s natural. But the lack of curiosity is upsetting.
You’re focusing on the wrong thing - lack of curiosity isn’t a problem. In fact, humans are naturally curious, what you see here is something strategically impeding that curiosity. Indoctrination is a major thing, but there is also active suppression if a given individual is too “radical” to be indoctrinated.
Sure, but there has to be some agency on the part of people. Like, yes they’re victims of propaganda and such, but I don’t want a model where everyone is acted upon and never acts. My wealthy coworkers who just don’t read books are who I’m thinking of. They have ample time and resources to learn more, but it’s easier to just watch anime and play dota.
If you don’t expect them to ever act, then nothing will change and we’ll just be crushed by capitalism and friends forever.
And by act I don’t even mean like go start a revolution, or a mutual aid group, or do anything dramatic. Just spend 20 minutes reading about history. Be curious. Overcome the quagmire of propaganda we’re immersed in. Just for a little bit.
Kids did not “learn how to use the internet” they learned how to use Google products, Apple products, and Meta products. These things are intentionally designed to PREVENT the user from learning any generalizable knowledge or transferrable skills.

The whole kids will learn ai like they learn the Internet is a terrible take, on top of all the other terrible takes. The youngest of us right now often have devices that ‘just work’ and they fall flat if the device doesn’t work.
This is why my kid gets hand me downs barely running an os. If they can’t fix it, it’s still mine.
(Realistically, the pc they use is a 10 year old Windows machine, and the good pc is running Bazzite, so once they yearn for fps, they need to learn how to use it)

The days of kids being forced to understand things to be able to fix them so they can play games are sadly long gone 😢.
I read it even worse than just the didactic aspects. She doesn’t think we ever needed to teach children how to be safe and protect themselves online (or now with ai). They just naturally know how not to get mauled by creeps.
