Did you know that not all tattoos can be removed? Yea, that’s part of the consultation. Because some tattoo inks aren’t reactive to the laser. Some skin tones don’t work. And it hurts, a lot, the whole time. Because it’s literally burning it off. Pending where on the body that is, it may not be feasible.
Which is why MOST tattoo “removals” are done as coverups. Because getting a tattoo is nowhere near the same thing, in time, in pain, etc as removing a tattoo.

For YOU, it’s important to know everything about something you’re getting a tattoo of. But it’s EXTREMELY common in both military circle and tattoo circles to just get a tattoo of a thing. Because sometimes, for some people, it’s not about what the tattoo is, but the place, experience, memory of getting it. The art itself is the least important thing.

Getting a tattoo removed isnt a simple one and done procedure. It takes months to remove a tattoo. Several appointments breaking it down, letting it heal, breaking it down, repeat. And it doesnt work with all tattoos/ink colors/skin colors.
You, naively, dont know what youre talking about. Getting a tattoo covered is the fastest and most common way to get rid of an old tattoo.

The tattoo thing was ALWAYS overblown. Anyone who knows marines, especially young shithead marines, knew that tattoo thing was stupid. I believe that he and his fellow marines didn’t know what it was when he got it. Because most people just learned what it was. So many people just now, this week, hearing the word “totenkopf” for the first time in their lives and feigning outrage.
I’ll even give you that maybe he found out later, knew what it was, but didn’t have it covered. And why?
Because it didn’t matter. That’s not what the tattoo meant to him, and its not what anyone around him thought it was. He had no pressing reason to cover it. Maybe it even served as a reminder of his shithead past.

However, you’re dismissing two other major categories and groups of people: power and taboo.
Its been studied and reported that many rapes/sexual assault happen, not solely for sexual attraction/gratification but to dominate. To have power over another. Not a mental illness or attraction, just a want to exert power.
Another group would be those into the taboo. The exotic chaser types. The thrill is in doing something forbidden.
