Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What determines if an action is halted, versus allowed to continue while the action takers are being sued?English
6·7 days agoGenerally, a preliminary injunction will be called for if the action is harmful and irreversible, if delaying it while the question is resolved wouldn’t cause significant problems for the party being sued, and if the requesting party is likely to win the lawsuit anyway.

politics @lemmy.world•Supreme Court Allows Trump Plan to Restrict Mail-In Voting, for NowEnglish
5·18 days agoWhen I googled that was the list I got, but I know that California, at least, still has in-person voting too.
California has “universal mail-in voting”, not “mail-only”. Meaning every voter is eligible to vote by mail, not that in-person voting is unavailable.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do American kids rely on the school cafeteria than bringing their own food?English
11·19 days agoThe lunch arrangements will vary greatly by age/grade level. A high school is more likely to have the canteen style while an elementary school is more likely to have the cafeteria style. In either case, bringing a lunch from home is also reasonably common.

TenForward: Where Every Vulcan Knows Your Name@lemmy.world•Given the argument that Data has Free Determination, Voyager is about how The Federation enslaves hologramsEnglish
8·21 days agoAnd TNG did break its own rules with Moriarty.
My headcanon is that Dr. Zimmerman and Lt. Barclay used the Moriarty program to discover how to make sentient holograms, and that’s why sentient holograms started showing up everywhere.
No matter how well you understand the passage of time in the abstract it’s a shock the first time you meet a full grown adult, with their own keys and everything, but you can remember what you were doing in the year they were born.

Bay Area@lemmy.world•New research finds San Andreas Fault is slipping faster than previously thoughtEnglish
9·22 days agoThe author of the article is trying way too hard to imply that the study predicts more and worse earthquakes.
For example, they open with:
Just a week after a 3.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the Hayward Fault in Oakland
Which just makes me laugh. They clearly just checked the USGS site for the largest recent quake in the area, and might not even realize just how puny and mundane a 3.9 is.
