What’s terrible is that the tech industry is constantly engineering for planned failure. Nothing ever just lasts the way it should. People literally think it makes sense to buy a new phone every 2 years when that’s actually bat shit crazy. There isn’t any RGB, folding ass gimmick that takes away from that fact. They make it an issue because they can’t just come out with what will essentially be peak for modern PC. Capitalism ruins everything.

“These resources make me money, so only I should have them”. This is like clowning on people for owning their music instead of streaming it, or growing their food instead of going to a super Walmart.

Quite terrible to have all that wealth in the hands of so few. We should distribute that more evenly to raise the quality of living for more.

From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time," Altman said. "You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you’re trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people’s intuition is the opposite of that.

deal with this very supply-constrained environment

It’s only supply constrained right now because YOU are buying all it up to try and force everyone to use AI they don’t need, and increasingly don’t want as they realize it’s pretty useless for 99% of people.

And much of isn’t being used, just stockpiled in warehouses while they wait for data centres that may never be built.

Yeah that’s the thing about how delusional these people are. They’ve completely convinced themselves that what is good for them is best for everyone else, and blame us for being so shortsighted that we don’t cede all control, agency, and resources to them. Fucking morons.

He can rent ram from me if he thinks it’s so terrible, it’s the best option for those who need compute after all. I’ll rent a VM with 16GB of RAM to him for let’s say $1000 a month. Go ahead Sam, it’s the best utilization after all. For $5,000 a month you can have a part time “spot” instance with a GPU.

Oh but I don’t work like Nvidia, Sam, you get the same terms we do with subscriptions. You miss one payment, one payment doesn’t clear, you’re cut off.

That sounds about fair for how us consumers have been treated.

Missed payments should be a suspension with a fine, plus late fee, plus convenience fee, plus admin fee, plus intrest on the late payment, plus reinstatement fee.

I’ve got 32GB of RAM that sits mostly unused in my main PC. I’ve got another micro PC with 16GB (I think) that hasn’t been on for year. Laptop has only 8GB but that hasn’t been turned on for sic months.

      Hoping this makes Sam upset.

Is this a “from my cold dead hands” situation?

      Because it seems like:

      a. AI would respond, “challenge accepted.”

      b. AI would also respond, “just like ours.”

Yes. Terrible for him that I can do my own computing without having to rent it from him.

Next in breaking news: local mechanic thinks “it’s quite terrible” for people to repair their own cars at home.

Some repair guys do too and I find it really annoying when they are secretive over things.

When I worked in a repair shop if a customer asked I would let them know exactly what I’m doing.

Manufacturers don’t even really want mechanics fixing them. Yes, we put that part that we know breaks in a position that requires disassembling half the engine. We’ll say it’s a 1 hour job. Good luck getting paid grease monkeys- now everyone shut up and buy more cars.

Definitely. If owners had to buy a new car every time it broke down, that would be nearly the manufacturers’ ideal situation. Personally I was as impressed as disgusted by the boldness of deploying features as a subscription. They still sold, so what do I know?
