No, this can’t be it, the kids are miserable just because of social media! All we need to do is ban social media and problem solved!
The old promise of entry-level work, where you find a position, learn the ropes, and make your way up, was already fading. Gen Xers and millennials can tell you that. But AI is quickening the unraveling, disrupting how young people find jobs—if they find jobs—and also what they confront when they get there. Gen Z is squinting into a fog, unsure of what’s coming, yet certain that disembodied decision-makers will have a say in it.
It couldn’t be that feeling like you have no future makes you depressed and unhappy!
@supersquirrel wow, it feels like a distopic cyberpunk novel/movie from the 80s.
Capitalism remains a problem.
I don’t think worker owner businesses would be so rabidly eager to do this AI shit. It’s ghouls and anonymous shareholders. People who don’t even work on the stuff being made.
If by worker owner businesses you mean petit bourgeoisie, then that’s not correct. They have been doing this too
No, I meant one where the business is owned by all the workers, not one where the owner also does some work.
Yeah that sounds like a worker cooperative (co-op).
All the workers in the company, or all the workers, period?
Internal democracy within entities that still have the same rapacious, anti-social incentives against broader society as traditional businesses won’t get you far. At best it might slow down the process of turning those within into faithful heralds of the algorithm of capital.
Worker owned co-ops are definitely less prone to this kind of nonsense.
There is an idea in Capitalism called “surplus labor”. It’s not controversial, economists from Marx to Freedman acknowledge it. What it means is that a capitalist labor market must have a pool of “unused” labor. Capitalism isn’t able, and it wouldn’t be desirable to simply employ everyone who wants to work. The same way capitalism needs some businesses to fail, it also needs some people to be poor.
Zoomers are not the “first” to be surplussed, the new part is it’s happening to people who imagine themselves to be in the middle class.
You guys have a middle class?
“imagine themselves” was the important bit
Not anymore
My next few words are going to be highly unpopular but what do I have to lose?
Social media is a cancer. Let’s put it as it is. Many laud it as an open chanel to divulge what the traditional media outlets do not but at its core all social media proved is that human beings are easily swayed and are uncapable or, even worst, unwilling to interact in a civil manner.
There is no exception to my knowledge to this behaviour in social media. Even in Lemmy it happens. Instead of banning kids from social media, perhaps we should consider social media as a whole and go back a few pegs on how we used the internet.
Regarding kids, there are already plenty of example cases where forcing the reduction of the use of social media improved the overall mental well being of children and adolescents. Even adults benefit from it. Perhaps banning it outright would not bad that bad.
your posts in this thread were so masturbatory that I deleted them all before we got even more jizz on the carpet
Congrats on nuking half the thread.
oh were you using that half?
I would’ve liked the option to do so. Just ban people if they’re annoying but keep the comments up.
that’s great thanks
“lounge carpet smelling like piss” is not a thing many people want in their lounges
But what about the way abnegating our duty to smell piss infringes upon the other guy’s right to piss freely?
And this has to do with the posted article how?
They say on social media.
That is the second time I get that exact same reply on Lemmy and, curiously, both events on topics regarding social media bans.
I’m starting to think I found an exposed nerve.
They say on social media.
I’m starting to think I found an exposed nerve.
Could you both please not be embarrassing?
Also what does anything of this have to do with the article?
It’s called “irony”.
And me thinking it was all about sarcasm.
at its core all social media proved is that human beings are easily swayed and are uncapable or, even worst, unwilling to interact in a civil manner.
The idea that human nature is rotten and cannot change is a core belief in Christianity, capitalism, and conservatism in general. It’s one of the oldest and most contentious political and philosophical debates. It’s OK to take the misanthrope position, but you shouldn’t speak about your opinion like it’s settled and obvious fact.
Fuck civility
Let me put this way then: the human psyche tends to be reflexive and defensive; people naturally push back if they find themselves being called on their words. The distancing social media allows, also allows for people to engage with the worst parts of themselves.
It’s extremely hard to find a person that has grown enough to be beyond that impulse of self defence.
I did not state people can not change. What I did state was that social media is not the stage to do that, as it enables the worst traits of people to surface.
> there are already plenty of example cases where forcing the reduction of the use of social media improved the overall mental well being of children and adolescents
[citation needed]
Brasil, France, local experiments in Portugal, my own country, where schools enforced total social media shutout, through the ban of cellphone use, and after some time actively asked the kids if they felt better in their environment and overall life with the reduced exposure to social media, the average answer being yes and the more educated and structured follow-ups finding there were positive indicators for the reduction on the use of cellphone and social media.
The studies are out there.
Ah, vibes, I see
This isn’t LLM powered slop, my rightfully suspicious moment acquaintance.
Professionals working day to day with kids and adolescents noticed how being constantly on their phones and social media was degrading the development of those individuals.
It was a psychologist, one working at a school, that first told me about FOMOphobia, which made me laugh, as the concept was just ludicrous to me. It took hearing several people, that work daily with kids and teens, most of them teachers, retelling how disconnected from the person next to them, while being obcessed with their social media feed, they saw their students and charges.
There is so credible established body of research that determines any casual relationship between social media use and wellbeing.
Correlations? Sure tons of studies showing those arguably maybe.
Proof of causation?
Nope, there is none, they have attached theirself to a story/narrative that is more seductive than the truth.
Yeah this is stupid because if you actually believe this than leave, what are you doing here?
Being the contrarian; someone needs to play the part.
And in my own science of one, I can atest beyond the shadow of a doubt, that actively reducing my social media activity improves my day to day wellbeing.
Being the contrarian; someone needs to play the part.
the worst part of social media is you
If you’re a contrarian just because “someone needs to play the part”, ergo society expects someone to be a contrarian, aren’t you actually a conformist? #makesyouthink
I am not interested in anecdotes.
In my own science of one […]
Pay attention, Ned. I was not including anyone else nor making a broad statement over the general population.
You’re welcome to discount my words, not to devalue my personal experience.
I can absolutely reject your anecdotes and I do.
