Washington (United States) (AFP) – A US federal judge blocked President Donald Trump’s massive triumphal arch project on Thursday, casting doubt over the future of the project hours after it was green-lit by a public commission.

District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the case, ruled that the Trump administration cannot start construction on the arch for two weeks while the court considers challenges to its legality.

The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) had voted 8-4 to approve the project earlier Thursday, despite hearing hours of testimony from dozens of furious opponents who questioned its legality and purpose.

Chief among the complaints was the location of the 250-foot (76-meter) tall structure: adjacent to the hallowed Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for hundreds of thousands of American service members.

The giant arch would be much taller than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, its inspiration. It would also tower over the Lincoln Memorial, directly across the Potomac River.

The four dissenting commissioners had called for the decision to be delayed, noting there were legal concerns, a lack of congressional appropriation to fund the project and questions about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s claims of the arch’s military use.

But the majority on the panel, which is controlled by Trump allies, voted against a delay and the Trump administration said it aimed to start work right away.

Chutkan’s ruling sided with several veterans and the attorneys general of Washington and Virginia, who had sued seeking to halt construction of the arch.

I’d really like to see that halted, but I would like even more if somehow Saddam’s cheesecake factory could be ungilded. Not possible perhaps, but a guy can dream.

The ballroom is basically just a 50’ tall missile-proof warehouse. It’ll be easy to fill with stacks of cubicles for the First Lady’s staff or even a replacement movie theater.

That’s absolutely not the point. Trump thinks the ball room and his renovations and the arch are his legacy. He thinks he will be remembered as a great leader. I don’t care that it’s incorrect, I want him to be denied that belief. I want him to see that people want to excoriate his every fingerprint from the face of the earth.

President Blue coming in in 2029 making a show of pulling down the curtains to wall in the Michelle Obama conference room, the Jill Biden first aid station, Melania Trump coat room, all the way back to the Martha Washington coffee room would give Trump an aneurysm. Doesn’t get much more Ozymandias than seeing your crowning monument parceled out to a bunch of wives, while you’re still alive.

The exterior is just a facade it’s not missile proof it’ll resist small arms and minor explosives but that’s it. The bunker underneath is hardened to resist strikes though.

I didn’t realize how massive this stupid thing was supposed to be.

I hope so too, but I don’t think this is a grift as much as an attempt to force memorialize himself.

DC is full of places like the Lincoln, or Jefferson memorials, and he wants an even bigger one because he’s “””the bestest president evar!!”””
