and the best part is that if a name is taken on one instance you can just try another!
I know! I hadn’t even thought of that until I saw someone’s was like “mee” and now I need to get another account. It’s like how people get caught off guard when I tell them my 20 year old email is just my name with no numbers or special characters.
Haha it’s great because there’s always another instance where your username will be available.
Or you can choose to be something different on each instance.
I just came over from Reddit too. It took me a day to settle in and understand how federation worked but now it makes total sense to me.

Welcome! It’s nice and comfy here, if a little less of an infinite content-hose compared to Reddit. You might need to do a little more heavy lifting yourself in terms of posting and commenting, but on the plus side - people actually read what you post, instead of being drowned by a deluge of spam and bots! And discussions are mostly friendly and civil!

I’ve been here since the API exodus. I still go on reddit sometimes but found myself frequenting Lemmy a lot more. It’s just better and the slow growing is quite noticeable. Gone were the days where you were always checking for new posts.
Happy to be here! I love finding alternative platforms to the big ones, I’m a forum nerd and soon I’m thinking about moving one from phpBB 3 to either Discourse or Node.bb and having it join ActivityPub. I hope more people will join lemmy soon!
