I did not know there was a community for sumo outside of Japan. I see I just missed the September tournament. Is there another one coming up?
This sport seems super interesting but I know nothing about it.
Welcome! The 15-day “honbasho” tourneys are every 2 months, and next one starts the 2nd Sunday in November! (there are also exhibition tourneys in-between but I don’t follow them… I think they’re having one in London soon?!?)
If you want a quick intro see the following:
If you want to catch up on the recent tourney, see one of these (will be taken down soon):

HAKKEYOI!!!
Added to my calendar, ty!
Welcome! Really, there isn’t all that much to know. Sometimes it can sound like a lot to learn because people tend to use the Japanese terms for things, so there’s a lot of unfamiliar language being used. There are also a lot of traditions to learn about. But as far as the rules go, it’s pretty straightforward: push the other guy out of the ring, or make them touch the ground before you do.
The Sumo Prime Time youtube channel has a lot of good videos with explanations about how the sport works, as well as highlights of past tournaments.
Thanks, Ill check it out
If you can access BBC iplayer (via vpn?) you can watch the Grand Somu Tournament in London right now.
aw yeah thanks for the notice! looks like most of the usual sources aren’t carrying it, but searching youtube for “sumo london 2025” and sorting by “recently uploaded” shows a couple of livestream archives from today. dunno how long they’ll stay up. Haven’t tried the VPN approach, maybe tomorrow.
