Fun fact: In Japan you have to prove that you have parking space for it in order to buy a car, so these are all officially approved parking spaces for these vehicles!
The process iirc is as follows:
- go to the local government office
- fill in and submit a form and stamp with your certified stamp
- in a few days a government clerk comes to measure your parking spot
- sometime later the office issues a certificate for your parking spot
- you take the certificate to the car dealer…

How are they getting out of these after they park them?
In some cases I would guess they leave it in neutral and push it in.
They just open the door and exit on the right side of their vehicle where the wheel is positioned
That works for the one kei truck but there are other pictures of vehicles that don’t seem to have any obvious exit.

Seeing that architecture makes me sad the US has so many building rules that are incredibly stupid like zoning laws, standardized home layouts, and setback requirements. It’d be nice to have my home go all the way to the edge of the sidewalk like practically any other sane country.
When you have infinite-ish land you think to fill them with parking spots. When you have barely any land you want to use as little of it as possible.

Is there some documentary about small/unusual living places and how they do things like cooking, washing, store clothes n stuff etc?
I’ve seen various youtube vids about coffin homes/bedspace apartments, and tiny homes are definitely a thing that has a following, so I wouldn’t be shocked to hear about a documentary about them, but I don’t know any off hand.

Overall I’m not super happy to live where I do now, but one thing I’m grateful for is that there’s ample parking everywhere I go.
The reverse for me. I’m very happy to live where I do, because there’s very little parking. More room for humans, shops, bikes, less for carbrained drivers with anger issues. Just overall a safer and more comfortable environment to live in.
Looking at these pictures is giving me anxiety. Imagining having to do this every day sounds so stressful, even with practice. I’d probably just give up and get a moped or something.

You mean like everyone has done for over 100 years until just a few years ago? Hell, Japan didn’t require backup cameras on new models sold in Japan until 2022. Virtually none of these cars in these photos have backup cameras…

My car is just old enough to not have a camera, I’ve driven two friends around that have commented about the struggle of backing up without a camera.

A lot of modern cars have such tiny rear windows, which are then additionally obscured by rear seat head rests, you pretty much need a camera to see anything. There’s a Polestar model that doesn’t have a rear window at all.

I’ve never had one in any of my cars. It’s a nice to have but not in any way necessary. The only thing I’d need one is to know how far I’m from the bumper of the car behind me. Usually I drive as close as I dare to and when I go check there’s at least a meter wide gap still.
Since these are private parking spots, wheel stops are probably installed.
