Old American here. My mom got us all up and made us breakfast, because she didn’t want us eating what we could make by ourselves--cereal was only for the weekends. After that, we were on our own to get dressed and get out the door. Starting in the first grade when I was still five for a couple of months, I walked to school with my older brother and sister till they went to a different school, and we all walked with kids from the neighborhood. No one walked alone.
So, while I could have gotten up, made cereal, and gotten myself to school starting in first grade, I’m glad I didn’t need to. Because my mom loved me.
Mom making breakfast ended when I started high school, but I was the last of four kids, and she was more than done with all of it by then.
If my mom hadn’t made us breakfast, my sister probably would have, she loved doing that stuff. She also had her first kid when she was 22, and then had two more.
I made my son breakfast (never cereal, always a hot breakfast) every school-day morning through 10th grade, when he said he wanted to do it himself. I didn’t mind doing it, but I’ve always been a morning person.
Yeah I have to conclude that I live in a simulation after reading the Finn’s comment. Because the only explanation for them saying this is that I live in a simulation that occasionally needs to recalibrate itself to what I find believable. They are saying that most practically-toddlers in Finland are just as responsible as adults if not more so.
My mom usually woke me up since she was already awake anyway but if she didn’t I would’ve just used an alarm. I knew how to get dressed and make myself a bowl of cereal at that age and I don’t need to pack a lunch because it gets served at the school for free.
By 1st grade they should be capable of getting up and out without you, less you absolutely have to drive them there.

Back up. You’re expecting six-year olds to wake up on time, shower, get dressed, make and eat breakfast, and get to school? All by themselves?
How long has it been since you met a six-year old?

My kids were doing that by age 6ish, yeah
That’s not at all unusual in Finland. I walked alone to daycare before I even started pre-school - granted it was at the end of the street I lived on.
Did you also do all the other stuff by yourself? I walked to school by myself, too, but I certainly didn’t do all of that by myself.

I don’t think most kids in that age bracket shower in the morning.
Sure, how many make breakfast, pack lunch, their schoolbag, and get to school on time?
