      The damage gambling does to society in general and families specifically is horrific. It’s one of those things that hotwires the reward systems of a persons brain as surely as alcohol or opioids. And it’s so casual, gambling, especially at this level, finds the people who are susceptible, and exploits them until they are rung out like a dry cloth.

      You may be one of the people who can just casually gamble, and not understand why it’s so crazy destructive, or you could be 10 toes in a downward spiral, there’s no way for me to know.

      This period of legalized gambling is going to go have a body count at the end of it, a huge one.

        Sucks for many, benefits some. I didn’t vote for this but I’ll participate as it’s legal. Not saying it should be, trying to stay neutral in this one. I spend like $3-$10 a week which o can afford. Just during football season.

          Yea i started planning one out this spring and opted for DIY. its still expensive as fuck and i hate myself for taking on the project. But i also cant afford to heat my house with kerosene anymore so something had to break. it was my back and my bank they broke.

              It’s pretty common in the North. Older houses built in the 40s thru 60s that have never been fully renovated. Furnaces are surprisingly resilient

    Most gas pumps that do that have a way to mute them. It’s usually the second button from the top of the four on the right hand side. Sometimes it’s the top right button, but most of the time it’s the second one. Enjoy the silence. Oh, and also if you press and hold 2 on your microwave, you can turn the button pressing and beeping off. Silent microwave is the way to go.

      I’m glad I was able to get an EV. Its great for my anxiety never having to wrangle busy gas stations, and the vast majority of my trips are short enough that the home charger is all I need.

        The logistics of charging stations means not having to be standing next to the station for minutes at a time. Doesn’t seem like a big difference but gas pumpers are a captive audience more than chargers

        My small rural town, which is clearly thee more smaller and ruraler than thou… still has a 1970s style pump with the big flip up handles and you have to stop it yourself and the numbers are on a physical wheel that rolls. Better think twice before claiming rural there city boi!!

        Read that as “country” and was confused, because this is a very 'Murican thing. Not saying it doesn’t exist at all elsewhere, just that it seems to be extremely common in the US and not so anywhere else. There would be riots in a lot of countries if they even tried this.

        In my area it’s only the major chains. The privately owned ones don’t, but I think that’s just because their pumps are too old.

      Theyre smart to that already, most of the ad pumps I’ve run into have speakers hidden inside the housing that you can’t access anymore, and the “bottom left button on the screen mutes the ad” trick is disabled.

      At this stage I just boycott those stations, leave a 2 star review on Google and deal with paying an extra 15c a gallon a couple blocks away.

        Why not just build your own dirty nuke from parts you got on the dark web and use it to wipe the city block containing the offending gas station off the map completely?

        Why not walk on some railroad tracks until you find a railroad spike lying around?

        Then you could take that spike and stab the screen. 8 screens taken out, and the gas station can’t pump gas anymore. You’d think they get the message before they get to the 8th. If not? Oh well. Their loss.
