This isn’t an unpopular opinion you’re displaying in this thread. It’s a generally unpopular attitude.

You won’t define what you say a sport is, yet you have challenged others to do so. You basically just seem like you’re fat shaming with a juvenile meme looking for an in-group of folks why will join you.

Where? Where have I said “I challenge you to define what a sport is instead of me”? I’m not asking a single person to define their definition of sport. Saying things like that, it’s you making wrong assertions.

I’m not fat shaming anyone. I’m not looking for anyone. If that’s all you got? You don’t know much, do you?

            Yes, you are.

This is more of that unpopular attitude I was talking about.

People aren’t in here disagreeing with your opinion as much as they’re in here disagreeing with you, as a person, based on what you’re giving us.

Maybe go outside and get some exercise.

First of all, idk even what you mean when you say ‘yes you are’. Second of all, what does your opinion on any of these matters, matter to me? You can say that, I don’t care. Your opinion is worthless here, and to me personally.

I think a test of dexterity is just as much a contest of physical skill as one of strength might be.

Would you consider archery or target-shooting a sport?

I think that’s somewhat reasonable. The line between “sport” and “game” has always been kind of fuzzy. People often feel strongly that their preferred game is seen as a sport because it helps legitimize it as a pastime

I know chess for instance has often been considered a sport, but frankly I don’t really see it. I’ve also known people who say that as long as it’s on ESPN it’s a sport, which would mean poker and some video games are sports and that’s another one I have trouble with.

Although regarding video games, I do think they sometimes have a stronger claim than poker or chess. E-sports leagues can be highly competitive, technically challenging or strategic, and often require teams playing against each other. I still don’t think of them as a “sport” the same way as I would basketball, but in some contexts they do feel like more than a “game”

That’s almost pretty much what I’ve been trying to say throughout this charade. I think it’s down to how you define sport personally as, like I’ve said, it’s a human invention that everyone has an opinion on, not a fundamental universal definition that’s fixed.

That’s always my argument. How can you categorize something without defining it?

I always said sports are anything with points that anyone can watch and say ‘yes this person/team won because they scored more or had a faster time’ (like darts, chess, golf, speed walking)

I define things that the scoring can be open to interpretation by the judge at the time to be an art and not a sport (like ice skating, cheerleader, break dancing)

This definition gets a little messy in things like boxing where a judge can say one boxer was better that round and another judge interprets the other boxer was better. If one boxer gets knocked out then the winner is obvious and it’s more like a sport.

I don’t really care though, I mainly watch AEW.

You have a fair definition of sports, although my own personal definition is a little different. And that’s my point: people define things like this differently, that’s all I’m saying really.

It wouldn’t matter. Everyone has their own definitions of sport. If I offer mine, everyone else will only say ‘oh you’re wrong’ despite the fact that the concept of ‘sport’ is not a fundamental indefatigable universal truth, but a matter of opinion/personal preference

Ah, so you’re avoiding the fuzzy boundary problem by using a list definition. If it’s on my list, it’s within the definition. Anything not on the list is outside the definition. My favourite way to define complex things.

Biologists should use this approach when defining life.

Well no not really: I’m just pointing out the obvious really. I mean, it’s not like ‘sport’ is a fundamental building block of reality with a fixed definition. What I’m saying is: it’s a matter of opinion. It’s a human concept, not a universal one. Just because some bloke in charge of a sports committee or anyone else is of the opinion that sport is defined as so-and-so, the fact is I don’t have to agree. The same with the classification of whether darts constitutes a sport or not. I don’t have to agree just because ‘they’ say it is. If anything, I’m saying the list doesn’t exist and it’s down to the individual.

Considering you’re the one making the assertion that darts is mot a sport, then you need to back your argument up with why.

Well you’re missing my point a little there. My point is that darts not being a sport is my opinion.

you need to back your argument up with why.

Why? It’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it, I don’t have to ‘back up’ anything to you.

Plus, even if I did, others would just say my definition is ‘wrong’ despite that there is no ‘right or wrong’ indefatigable answer to the definition of sports.

Look, the definition of sport, or the classification of a certain activity as a type of sport, these aren’t indefatigable universal truths, they’re a matter of opinion. It doesn’t matter what the ‘official’ definition of sport is by some committee or something, other people have different opinions on the definition of such things. Just because some blokes sat around a table and their opinions were that darts should be called a sport doesn’t mean I have to change my opinion and agree with them. Just because you think it’s a sport doesn’t mean I have to.
