I learned that soap is a salt and that acids like vinegar break it down and kind of rerelease the fatty acid that made it up.

    It was very gross.

Earlier this year I found out you’re supposed to run the sink water until it’s hot, then start your dishwasher. Also sprinkle in some powder detergent inside the door, especially if there is a tray for PreWash detergent.

Not recent, but I spent the majority of my teenage years dealing with awfully frizzy and unmanageable hair because I was shampooing daily (also using an excessive amount). I was under the impression that you need to thoroughly shampoo all oils away every time you shower in order to be “clean.” When I moved to university and no longer had parents around to tell me that I stink, my hygiene standards became more… relaxed, but I was surprised that my hair was a lot healthier!

it varies from person to person. I have very oily skin and hair.

about 30 minutes after a shower where I use an oil stripping soap my skin looks like I rubbed Vaseline all over it.

I have to routinely soak/bleach my sheets/pillows to remove all the oil.

at this point I’m surprised the US army hasn’t invaded my ass.

I started looking up basic stuff after I saw a video of that guy who would shit in his hand in the bathroom and thought that was normal.

Turns out I was brushing my teeth backwards, you’re supposed to use mouthwash, then floss, then brush, and don’t spit.

      What the fuck?!?

Or you can just brush. For me mouthwash is something to use if you’re too tired to stand around brushing or in too much of a rush or need to re-clean your mouth after a snack.

But yeah when I use both I do mouthwash first because slushy liquids are more likely to remove toothpaste on the tooth surface.

every dentist I have ever gone to in 50 years it’s always been; brush, floss, wash. always spit.

even people I have dated brushed like this.

not saying you’re wrong…but you might want to verify your sources.

That’s crazy, I do floss, brush, then mouthwash. It just makes more sense to me : flossing is mechanically speaking the “rawest” operation, as in it frees interdental space from big chunks which allows the brush to get in there and remove leftovers, and then mouthwash applies a protective film over it all. But maybe it’s all a movie I’m directing in my head

Mouthwash not necessary. Statistically flossing first then brushing has cleaner teeth, but functionally dental professionals just want you to be flossing at all so we won’t judge you for flossing after. Spit and leave residual fluoride toothpaste on teeth.

Are you talking about not spitting mouthwash or toothpaste? Either way, you absolutely are supposed to spit. Every toothpaste I’ve ever used has directions not to swallow it.

Opening cereal/fruit/granola bars and similar foil wrappers. I would tear them on the serrated part and then only a sliver of the wrapper would come off and I’d have to try to widen the resulting hole in order to extract the bar, often crumbling part of it in the process. However, quite by accident I discovered that if I instead ignore the serration and tear against that foldy seam part that runs down the entire bar, then it separates right down the middle like magic and I can easily remove the bar. Often works on 8/16oz cheese too.

Another kitchen one. I always assumed the strongest water flow was closest to the faucet, but actually the water just about to hit the sink works better. This discovery has been useful for rinsing out things like cake icing tips and tea infusers.

Plus the stream seems to adhere into a narrower cross-section lower down, further increasing pressure, at least with aerated faucets. It could just be the result of lengthening from increased velocity, which may not actually lead to increased pressure.

also apparently with coffee-press you have to use filters, otherwise you also get the oily cafestol, which can potentially raise your cholesterol. i looked at the aeropress, they have thier own filters.

i find out the coffee people in the subs a little to excessive with thier coffe, you must steep it correctly, ooh we need this and that kettle, we need to bloom it this or that way. these people have way too time on thier hands, which is why its for people who are generally well off.

Cellophane rolls like cling wrap, and other cooking rolls like parchment paper need to have the sheet length you want pulled out then close the box lid over it-

they tear away perfectly- EVERY TIME.

Nobody told me you were supposed to scrape/scrub your tongue when brushing your teeth… and nobody told me about washcloths either. 🫣 My wife put me on to that about a decade ago (so, in my early twenties) so by now it’s just part of my life but yeah…

I learned that you should roll up a period pad and use the wrapper of the new pad to hold it rolled closed. They have a little tape and it reduces mess and smell.

In my defense, I didn’t use pads until last year.

going from pads / tampons to the silicone cup was my learning a better way. First week was rough but by the end of the week and thereafter I couldn’t even feel it once it was in. Went to fuck a few times and the dude was like TF is this? And I’d be like oh shit lemme swap it for a disc real quick.

  • I’ve been apparently wearing my belt upside down because I put the latch on the right and the cover on the left. Only noticed the other day that the logo on the cover was upside down. I’m not flipping it the other way tho. It’s too awkward to do and undo that way.

I know trouser buttons are flipped left-rightfor men and women. Is it the same for belts?

      • Usually belts for men don’t have anything on them indicate a “proper” direction, you would just wear them whatever is comfortable, and if you have a buckle, that goes on over the latching part.

I have a Groove Life belt, tho. It’s got a special latch with a built in buckle; the buckle is printed so that it should be on the right so it’s readable (it’s just a “GL” logo) but I find it easier to have the underside on the right with the buckle part on the left.

Turns out the pedal in the middle slows down the car and you don’t need to just swerve around things all the time.
