Up to you whether you want to limit your answer to software that is possible/realistic
A phone app that automatically accepts calls from suspected scam numbers, robocalls and unknown numbers and immediately mutes the mic, keeping the call going until the machine on the other side of the line disconnects and marks my number as non-working.
This has been how I’ve gone down from multiple spam calls a week to just a few a year. I’d really like to automate that.
I’ve been doing it this way for a while too. Glad it’s working for others
I had an idea, personally I just use the Google phone app it seems to do a pretty good job of blocking spam calls somehow. However I had a funny idea. I suspect that these robocallers May be able to recognize the we’re sorry your call cannot be completed as dialed tone and words which may signal to them that the number doesn’t work.
I just want something that’ll chop the sponsored segment out of my podcasts. Can’t be that hard. Every sponsor segment starts and ends with a standard jingle, so just have the software look for that opening and closing jingle and cut out whatever’s in between, right?
Honestly considering vibe coding it because ads are the reason I don’t listen to my podcasts anymore
One of my favorite uses for a a VPN is hearing podcast ads in a language I don’t understand.
There is sponsorblock for YouTube and https://github.com/ericmedina024/podcast-sponsor-block - so if your podcasts are on YouTube, that might work for you
I’ve thought about that too. Then I feel guilty cutting out their revenue source. Then I realize that doesn’t matter. Then I realize that it’ll require also wrapping it in a whole-ass podcast app. But there could probably be a way to download episodes, run them through the ad filter, then host an rss feed of that list of files… that’s it, I’ll do it.
I download the podcasts I want to listen to, then host my own RSS so I can manage it better long-term.
Automating it would be rad, but if I could even just plug the episodes I have into such a software and de-sponsor them in batches I’d be happy. I was caught up with Hey Riddle Riddle right up until their ads stopped being a set length. Now I gotta skip forward and backward until I find the end of the ad, and I simply stopped listening.
Penis_enlargement.exe
If I could make that, I’d be rich. And have a big penis.
Something like duolingo but for voice training specifically.
It’s what I am working on at the moment as personal project but I don’t have experience with meither microphones nor signal analysis.
I think Yousician had a vocals program, but I haven’t tried it.
A task / to do organizer that:
-
intelligently populates a “do today” list while handling dependancies and scheduling
-
is editable and viewable by multiple people, has individual tasks for each user, and also pulls from a list of shared tasks
-
keeps a record of when and by who previous tasks were completed
-
is capable of but does not require integration with calendar, fitness tracker, and messaging
Buddy of mine is working on something like this: https://git.circuitforge.tech/eva/focus-flow

Okay so you know how Ad Naseum is a thing? It’s like uBlock but it clicks on ads to fuck with advertisers?
I wish we had something like that for youtuber sponsors built on top of SponsorBlock. Like imagine it finds the affiliate link, signs up for this shit using a burner email, and then the bot doing this deletes itself.
It makes the youtuber look bad, it makes the brand look bad, and you feel like a gigachad for doing it.
Is it possible? Maybe, but realistically I believe this is a form of fraud, so I imagine no one would do this, BUT I WISH IT DID EXIST!
You had me in the first half, but very quickly I realized we went opposite directions with that idea.
Like, I would absolutely love a program that automatically followed affiliate links for whitelisted channels that I watch. Obviously I wouldn’t want it to buy things, but it would allow me to show a little bit more support.
Just replied to a comment above but yeh I’d love something like this. Something that punishes or profits (in my favour) from pushy advertising.
This should not be fraud. It’s simple resistance.
Optical character recognition/digitisation thingy but for sheet music.
This apparently does exist and is called OMR(Optical Music Recognition) software
It exists, but every bit of software I’ve tried has incredibly poor performance on anything except the absolute cleanest typset printed pieces.
I wonder if an AI can do that? It’s obsoleted LeafSnap.
just tried with the free version of claude. It works a lot better than anything else I’ve tried but it’s not perfect, averaging ~2 mistakes per 10 bars for a relatively simple score.
Seems strange that it’s so hard to get right. I guess it’s a bit like reading handwriting - subtle tiny differences?
Does it give you a midi file from a scanned musical piece?
It outputs ABC notation, not midi. MIDI isn’t really the right format for sheet music.
Wikipedia has a section on how it works and at least to some degree also why it’s hard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_music_recognition#Approaches_to_OMR
If I was to build something like this, could you beta test? Sounds like a fun weekend project for me 😄
yeah, I’d be happy to test it.
Shoot me a DM and send me some sheets to work with, I’ll post a repo link with a proof of concept and we can refine it from there
Should be doable with current AI
Nice try, Microsoft. Not letting you vibe code my ideas
Just off the top of my head:
- More domain-specific languages for doing traditionally-mouse-driven kind of workflows. (OpenSCAD is one of the better examples of such a DSL that does exist, but there aren’t very many. I’m being the change I wish to see in the world on this one.)
- A vi/vim-like text editor that has the features I want (
gu/gU,q<buffer>,v, etc) and not the ones I don’t (syntax highlighting, auto-indent, a whole-ass language built in, GUI support, etc) and is in the Gentoo standard package repository. - An actively-maintained no-slop fork of the Linux kernel.
A program that continuously poisons all corporate AI data sets.
I mean, that’s sort of already happening: Model Collapse. It’s just a matter of time now.
I want stand-alone spreadsheet tables. Like if I wanted a 3x6 grid that acts like a spreadsheet, without out all of the chrome of a spreadsheet program.
If not that, system wide spreadsheet functionality whenever a table is invoked.
Org mode my dude or dudette.
I’ll have to give that a go. Thanks.
I mean, he’s not wrong, but it involves learning emacs and elisp, which is kind of a substantial bar.
I want a MMORPG where there are 100,000 unique NPCs all run by AI with a custom backstory that keep track of the world events and respond accordingly.
I want them to have player/party specific memories and information. I want Tue merchants to remember the okayer and treat them according to how they were treated.
Just go outside, man.
How do I quick save? I hit F5, shot a dude in the face, hit F9, and nothing happened…
You have to have two traits for your character from the start: white skin and incredibly wealthy. If you don’t have both of those you’ll have to become a police officer which is easy enough, but easier if you’re char is white and rich.
But outside, nearly nobody gets what they deserve.
And if you need a quest, go and find my frying pan!
I need ten frying pan handles, so you must keep hunting frying pans down in the Skillet Sepulchre until you’ve got ten handles. Frying pans only have a 10% chance of dropping handles as loot. Frying pans have a five minute respawn timer. There will be a dozen other players trying to complete this quest.
Khajit has wares, if you have coin.
Side quest: go grind from 9:00 to 6:00 pm, 5 days a week (minimum), till you get enough coins.
…which in the end you’ll discover a group of robber that associated with a syndicate that involve scam center, money laundering, sex trafficking, and also kidnapping. Go forth, my hero, for my heirloom frying pan needs your help.
Yes, that is something that modern AI could have some value in a game. Not AI-generated assets (graphics and music), not even AI filling in for lazy writters, but AI providing emergent story and gameplay. Like Dwarf Fortress, but LLMs instead of some “simple” hardcoded rules. This should be a genre of its own, not something pushed to every game, though.
It’s a great idea in theory, but the reality is that LLMs just aren’t actually very good at that kind of thing.
Depending on the temperature of the model their writing is either painfully bland and repetitive, or it’s the kind of “creative” that’s driven by randomness, so you’ll get completely out of pocket replies that just don’t fit the situation at all.
The answer to what this person is looking for is simple; find a good group to play tabletop RPGs with. Software is never going to give you that experience.
It obviously isn’t exactly what you’ve described but you should check out Erenshor
A non-interactive scheduler to play my movies and TV shows at set times each week. It should remember with episode was last played so it keeps the sequence correct. I shouldn’t need to do anything except keep the app open.
If i understand your needs correctly, you’re in luck, it exists.
Oh, this is exactly what I was looking for! QuasiTV and Native TV for anyone wondering.
At least one of them seems to have a Google dependency, with rules me out. But I’ll look into them in more detail. Thanks again!
Fuck yes! I love jellyfin but I’d kill for a live broadcast to break the stream nonsense.
I love stremio and jellyfin but browsability is dire
Set up ErsatzTV, you can plug it into jellyfin as a live broadcast and it’ll show a TV guide too.
Do you mean like linearr? Sorry if I’m misunderstanding you
That’s very close. If I understand what I’m reading it prepares the shoes for viewing just like I mentioned. But it doesn’t play them automatically. I’m looking for the old experience where the TV Show A plays every Tuesday at 7pm without my needing to press play.
Still, your suggestion is better than my current situation so I might try to get it running. Thanks!
Content filtering that works cross-platform and is able to remove the all the noise from social media. Dunks, insults, one liners, posturing, grandstanding, outrage and so on. People who demand to be heard but have nothing to say.
What you’re looking for is called “touching grass”. Go outside and interact with real people.
Not sure about you, but recently, a lot more of those online behaviors have started appearing IRL.
That means that people already did these things, but, like alcohol, the Internet lowers the inhibitions to not behave like that. It’s a pretty short leap to say that, if you spend a lot of time online, these behaviors will become a large part of who you are on and off the Internet.
Does it mean that people can’t relearn how not to act like that? No, but it’s gonna be hard.
Let me first describe a very specific problem that I’d like to solve.
So, I make mods for some games and VN (to be more specific, it’s unofficial translations). Sometimes I have to update it and release a new version (and sometimes I just release it in an ongoing mode, part by part, when the next chapter is translated). In either case, I have to ask my audience to manually re-download the entire archive and re-apply it on top of the game directory. Although I manage to make patches pretty lightweight, it still feels so wasteful to re-download the whole archive, even if only a few files are changed!
So, I’d like to have something that could help upload these patches, distribute them, and apply them easily. It should be able to calculate the diff between the local copy and the remote origin, download only required files, and then apply them on top of the game directory. Something like Steam Depots, but standalone. And it should be easy to use, so rsync doesn’t count!
Does all of this make sense, or am I making up nonsense?
Isn’t that just a mod manager? So you want a mod manager that supports the games you work on?
Good question! I’d say there should be a mod manager on the receiving end. Something like Limo, that has both generic and some game-specific deployers. But that’s only part of what I want: there should also be a middleware to manage differential downloads between it and the origin.
And when I think about it, it becomes clear that all of this has to be backed by P2P of some sort, as there is no such service that could reliably provide even a simple direct link to an arbitrary binary file, let alone allow you to run some odd directory diff protocol. Unless you have your own server, but this is obviously not an option. So it seems like P2P is the only viable option.
So there should be at least 3 components: a mod manager, a directory diff middleware, and a P2P daemon, and they should all work together. And I just realized that the «directory diff middleware» sounds just like OSTree! But it should be able to pull/push from some kind of P2P remotes instead of HTTP ones. Or something like that.
